I may have mentioned on here that we have a lot of animals:

2 dogs
5 chickens
1 duck
1 tree frog
1 r abbit (inhereted)
1 box turtle (inhereted)
1 S ulcata tortoise
2 Ranitomeya variabilis “Splash Back Poison Dart Frog”

To further complicate things we’d like to get fish. Actually we did get a goldfish feeder fish that lasted just long enough for my daughter to name “Peach”, shortly after she went to bed that fish kicked it...

We explained that Peach died and it was probably because she was already sick. We told her that it was ok to be sad, but that things die. S he kind of shrugged it off and went back to her toys. Shes super young so we didn’t expect her to get it but we didn’t want to lie either.

Anyway, I go to the store to get a new fish. This time I flag someone down and explain the situation. She said that a gold fish was too big for our table top tank anyway and sold me on some of the neon tetra that school together and everything. I googled how they “dye” those fish, I shouldn’t have. I honestly feel bad for buying them now.

All is well that ends well for now. We have a little school of fish and a couple of live plants in there, our daughter calls them all “Peach” two are neon pink, one is neon green, and one is neon orange.

Some of you may know that I like to go ahead and overdo it when I get into something new. So I’d like to setup a 20-30 gallon tank with all natural stuff. Freshwater for sure, not sure if I want tropical fish, or cichlids,  or what. End result I want a super cool tank that has tons of options for fish so that my little girl can pick out whatever she wants when I’m finished.

I do all natural setups for my tree and dart frogs, but I have never done a fish tank. Any Oppos know about fish?

There’s a lot of information out there about how to set up an aquarium. The most important thing to pay attention to is the nitrogen cycle. Get this wrong and you’ll keep killing fish. https://www.thesprucepets.com/aquarium-nitrogen-cycle-1378370 . Be sure to remove any activated carbon filtration until the cycle completes and the water is stabilized.

Other ways people screw up include :

Not letting the aquarium cycle and stabilize

A dding too many fish

O verfeeding the fish

K eeping the aquarium at the wrong temperature for the fish they have

Mixing fish from different regions (they will kill each other)

Using too much light (which promotes algal growth if there’s too many nutrients)

or Cleaning the aquarium incorrectly.

When you pick a spot for the aquarium, choose a stable location without direct sunlight and away from high traffic areas so people walking by don’t startle the fish. When you select the lighting, stick with fluorescent or LED fixtures. Incandescent lights can affect the temperature throughout the day. I avoid decorations that create bubbles as they also splatter water out of the aquarium and increase evaporation rates. The Aquatech filters sold at Walmart are the same thing as the Marineland Penguin (expensive) filters sold at the pet store. I’ve used these successfully for years. Avoid under-gravel filters on larger aquariums. They are cheap, but not particularly effective.

If you have specific questions, I can lend a hand. The best thing to do when you are starting out is pick up a good book.

By the way, those “neon” tetras you bought may be GloFish which are genetically modified to glow. The “painted” fish are the ones that have been injected with dye. Then there are the true Neon and Cardinal tetras whose colors are natural:

Snails are good for natural tanks and will keep  your tank clean but you have to be prepared for the results when it unexpectedly lays 3000 eggs overnight

That’s a good selection of animals! Funny, we have a young daughter too (19 months old) and just got her a fish tank and 3 neon tetras for Christmas! (to go with our dog, 2 cats, and 4 chickens...so have a bit of catching up to do to match your collection).

As far as I know neon tetras are not dyed. Some other forms of tetras apparently do get dyed, but as far as I can see these aren’t? Got the same info from our very reputable local small pet store where we got them.

We just have a small 2.5 gallon tank for them...2 of them weren’t really being very active for a while and wouldn’t eat much at all, but are finally starting to get more daring to come up to eat.

Loaches will eat them. My favorite snail hunter was a YoYo loach.
