Is there a color that is more ‘90s than this? No. There is not. Well, maybe that weird Pepto pinkish-maroon color that the F-150 Flare Side was available in, but this was more common.

They were not good at taking interior shots, but it’s pretty damn clean. Gotta love the automakers’ thought process back then. Power locks but no power windows.

I did almost buy a used manual Tempo coupe as my first real car purchase back in ‘93, but it was too expensive. I bough t an older CRX instead.

Always amazed me how long these were made in the original form. This is a warmed over 1984 car. At least the sedans received a significant refresh for 1988 (along with the 1986 facelift and an update for 1992, I think), but the coupes received just the 1986 facelift and a couple updates.

My mom’s 1985 GLX had that same steering wheel and gear lever. Neutral drops in a Tempo aren’t exciting.

I think the one I was looking at was a ‘91 that had the (slightly) updated interior. I actually did like it but the CRX was definitely the better choice, even with an automatic. Plus it was a couple grand cheaper.

Yeah, these were hit and miss cars, you might get a good one, but you might get a money pit. My mom’s made it to 190K before it left the family, but hers was no doubt a rare case, and it was cared for. The CRX was far more likely to be reliable.

One thing about the one you looked at is that a manual that late is rare , I seem to recall manuals most in pre-88 cars.  I want to say the older manual cars even had a “5-speed” badge on the rear.  I recall in high school I knew a guy who had a zero option 85 Tempo L sedan, red with red vinyl interior, manual, hubcaps, it was very clean, would be something rare now. My mom’s was a blue on blue GLX with nearly every option, and I remember he quite liked it. The real rare Tempos are the diesels and AWDs.

This is such a quintessential old lady church and doctor’s office shuttle, the never used luggage rack on the truck just completes it.

The Taurus wagons seemed to follow the same philosophy, though Ford was a bit better at disguising it . The 1st and 2nd generation wagons were the same except for the front sheet metal and interior. Same with the 3rd and 4th generation wagons.

Good observation. The first Taurus wagon especially was such an advanced design too, it didn’t look dated at the end of its run in 95. The ovoid model also looked futuristic, which along with penny pinching gave it a long life.
