Terrible. It’s tough to describe devastation like that. I saw our Camp Fire the second night and it still is something I find hard to wrap my head around

To be fair England is the same size in square meters as Florida.

For American Oppos, that is approximately the same size as the land areas of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Connecticut all put together.
Or if you’re Canadian, the size of Nova Scotia.
Yikes, awful stuff. Good luck, Australians!

And to put THAT into perspective...so far this 2019/20 fire season, the total area burned across the country is standing at an estimated 12 million hectares...

That’s about 10 times the size of my state, and that makes the burned area larger than about 28 sovereign nations .

That’s insane. For reference, the US fire season of ‘18, which garnered lots of attention because of the late Californian fires, saw around 8 million acres burned over the whole nation. The US is roughly the same size as Australia, but with an order of magnitude more people.

If anything, I think this sort of view understates things because putting things in a big blob hides how much area is close to the fires.
