Volvo 240GLT. I’m making no comment on the Honda and its plate.

The Honda brings up an interesting question.   Is that dumb luck on the civic, or does the EU offer vanity plates?

A friend of mine dreams of having a 240 GLT. As it stands he owns two 244s, with the one in better shape sitting and not running while the crusty one storms the neighborhood with its glasspack exhaust.

too bad we never got that version of the Civic, and that silver car on the other side of the Volvo looks cool too

But why not make the nice one run? If you’re not married to keeping it all factory I’m told they’re not hard to MAKE run

Some countries do offer these (Sweden, Finland , etc) but Honda’s plate seems to be a regular one. “Weird ones” are rarely filtered out here but some owners like to change them into more neutral ones.  I have seen Finnish plates with all questionable 3 letter Engl ish words.

I asked him that, and he said something about the car having “issues” and other unparseable stuff. It's a real wonder, too, since he's already gone stem to stern on the crusty brick fixing and/or replacing stuff and knows the thing inside and out.

To answer your second question first, there’s no standardisation on number plates throughout the EU. Some countries offer limited or extensive personalisation, some don’t. Sweden ( I took the picture in Uppsala this afternoon) offers extensive personalisation but it’s not common. To answer your first question, this plate is in the standard format with three letters and three digits so it may be chance.

Here’s a personalised one I saw a couple of days ago:

Peugeot 207, a very ordinary little car. The French buy them in numbers, the Swedes rather less so.

I’ll bet it’s the K-Jet fuel injection , which requires gauges & knowledge passed down from mechanics who are either dead or have long-since retired. It’s best to have a therapist on speed dial and a goat that you can sacrifice.

He’s in touch with a mechanic who used to run the service department at the main Volvo dealer/importer in Puerto Rico, who in turn knows a few others familiar with Volvos, so he’s covered there. Supposedly the guy prefers to only work with 740s and prior generations and hasn’t been the same since Volvo released the 850.

Actually my car is K-Jet, it’s pretty simple once you understand it and all the info is available free online......and I would say it’s reliable as it has withstood my daily driving and tinkering and the coke fuelled ‘fixes’ of the previous owner.

Probably the biodegradable wiring harness problem if he’s already been through it and is a Volvo guy. Electrical diagnosis takes a special kind of person.

He’s already gone over the engine wiring on the running car and became very familiar with it in the process. It's his least favorite aspect of the car.

I checked with him and he’s currently looking for a replacement ignition module, and apparently he needs a specific part number only used for a few years. He’s gotten quotes of $300 for it.

Yes, I guess that’s true. I got lucky because my car was maintained by a Volvo shop for some time, so I haven’t had to dig too far into it.
