I have recently found myself making a trip of about 375 miles in a single tank. I was impressed. Especially since this trip used to take me well over one tank.

Kinja'd!!!

Since my last time making the trip I have made some modifications and done some maintenance. I have lightened the car about 75lbs, some of that being from a lightweight flywheel (8lbs compared to stock’s 19lbs). I have also removed the a/c system (40lbs) along with a few other things (air bag, radio, side latches, ignition coil, etc.). Maintenance wise: I have replaced the plugs, replaced the injectors and replaced the air filter. Oh and now with the koyo radiator, the engine temps seem to remain lower which I’m sure help.

I’ve gone from 20 something mpgs to 30 something mpgs. I am pretty damned impressed. So I was wondering: what about you Oppo? How far have you gone on a tank with your miata? My car was rated 26mpg highway, which was about what she was doing before. Now I estimate like 36mpg highway.

I really hadn’t notice too much of an improvement around town because I rev her up a bit and drive around spiritedly, but this being the first long trip in a while, I have noticed this vast improvement!

Wtf. Like 200 miles. Maybe

And I'm pretty sure my car is lighter than yours...

Really?? Mine is around 200lbs under factory at this point. This is exactly why I was curious about others’ experiences!

Oh that's right, you have one of the light ones... Mine was 2050 pounds on the scale, but then I added 80 pounds or so of sound deadening lol.

Well damn that’s still pretty light is t it? I’ve never actually weighed mine, but would like to. Where did  you even go? My Miata started life as the heaviest na miata, but I’ve been slowly changing that haha.

My Miata 1) is just for fun driving, and 2) had an exhaust I love the found of. Mileage is poor

Maybe 200 miles, 80mph on the turnpike isn’t great in a 5 speed

584 miles is the most but usually get between 450-550 miles per tank

I also love the sound of my exhaust, however my Miata is the only car I have.

Oh yeah I was cruising at 80+ most the way.  Kept her at 80 mostly.  This is why I was impressed with my mileage running around 4k rpms+ for hours.

True but i t is a Mazda still haha. I pla n t o add a Miata to the garage in a few years and am not sure how I will deal with half the range

Because of more smiles in that range haha.  It’s only a 12 gallon tank. They are decently fuel efficient for what they are

H alf the miles but twice the smiles  is a fair trade and the math checks out

I’ve pushed my stock NC to 350 before with A/ C and stereo blasting . Usually it’s 300 on trips and 250 around town because I fill up when the light comes on (after almost exactly 10 gallons).

Not bad. Was curious how the NC  differed.

the Insight can come close to cracking 400 on a tank; the TLX, assuming I do highway, can do around 320

I am envious of that MPG, my 335ix averages about 16 but will be firmly in single digits foot to the floor. I hypermiled once to see what I could really get out of it. I to pped out at around 28 MPG (450  miles/ 16 gallons) . I imagine my mustang is just straight shotgunning the its gas tank.

Vette does about 15mpg in the city and 27 on the highway and the Mini will do 20 city and 27 highway. I do keep assaulting all the on ramps tho...

You arent driving the car hard enough if you are getting 30+ lol. I used to get 30mpg when I first bought a Miata. I can still achieve that if I actually drive on a highway long enough but that is rare. But generally its aro und 24-25 mixed and closer to 20 if I really drive the piss out of it (can achieve 12-15 on track but that is different lol). Generally I can just barely squeak by 300 miles out of a full tank but its incredibly difficult to actually get a full tank with an NB. And the gas gauge isnt incredibly accurate to begin with so Im running in the E for a while at 300. Still generally better than the Subaru though as 100% highway in the miata will get me 330-350 in a best case scenario whereas the Subaru is lucky to hit 300.

Ok then that’s pretty solid. I figured those insights would be really good.   Miata’s is like 12

Solid. And yeah I usually get in the 20s driving around town, which really isn’t bad considering. And you bring up a good point with gas gauge accuracy. Mine seems to be pretty accurate, but yeah it seems to have spots it runs through fuel slower . I have gotten pretty damn low on the gauge and have not ran out of fuel yet. I don’t mess with e often  and usually fill up at 1/4 tank.

I drive way too much to fill up at 1/4 tank. Running full to empty all the time I’m still filling up twice a week or at least once per car if driven equally. Usually a third time on average if I also drive a bunch on the weekend

Fair enough. I’ve tried to cut back on driving and fill up once a week or so on average. Asheville  is pretty compact, so unless I go out of town it’s not too difficult to keep mileage low.

I'd have the same problem there as I do here. I just want to keep driving the twisties over and over. With my long commute I tend to drive for fun less and just try to hit fun roads on the way.

Ah well yeah I feel you. S ometimes I have to go out for a drive for fun, it is addicting. W hat keeps my mileage low is my commute is only like 7 miles or so.

I had a 20 mile round trip commute when I lived in NJ. Somehow I still managed to rack up 25k in one year on my miata. This is how I broke my motor lol.

Damn! You went hard!  When I first moved here from Cincy, I was traveling back and forth and driving up and down the parkway a lot and put a good amount of miles doing that. But even still I’ve averaged just over 10k miles a year. I don’t go quite as hard as other people do on their miatas/sports cars. I’m trying to restore her not break her haha

10k lol. Im driving two cars now and still do far more than that per year. And I dont really consider it “a lot”. It was around 20k on the Subaru and 12k on the other miata last year. Granted the Miata broke often but it got 5 track days in during that time before dying. New miata has seen about 7k since I bought it in April although that is also broken at the moment lol. But at least this one is worth fixing and is not super broken either, just minor coolant spraying haha.

They do seem to enjoy spraying coolant don’t they? Haha. Sorry to hear the new one is broke.  Mine is currently not spraying any, so I have that going for me. And yeah I know I avoid driving it to keep mileage low-ish. I was putting a lot of miles on my gf at the times Corolla when she was away at college. That kept some miles off her, but yeah I just try not to drive needlessly, especially as I have been slowly fixing her.
