Crossed 3000 miles before making the first payment. And I  thought I could do a 12k per year lease when I started this whole process, good thing I decided to buy instead.

Jesus...
My car is almost two years old and it still has less than 10,000 miles.

12k miles a year is nothing. It’s almost offensive that they offer that.

I used to do 25,ooo miles a year. Then I got a company car, then I got an office a couple miles from home. Now it’s like 7,000 miles a year.

Most manufacturers offer 10, 12, and occasionally 15k a year for leases.

I’ve seen 16k, 20k, and 25k kilometres. So, closer than I thought, but still, not a great option for people who drive every day.

Since about 2010, I’ve averaged about 6-7k yr. since I bought the 4Runner, I’m now closer to 15-16k. I told my wife we needed to split drive time a little more or I’ll end up with more miles on the 4Runner in 2 yrs than she has on her Jeep in almost 6.

This will be my first year of working full time. I managed to do 12k last year on the Mini despite still being in school and only working part time. I would probably be on course for 12-15k, but I am now making 1-2 trips to NH a month which probably adds 3k a year to my mileage.

I often wonder how it happens that I drive everywhere every day and never put more than 5k on my car a year. My commute is short, but still.

Oh well, I won’t look that gift horse in the mouth.

Median miles driven in the US is something like 13,500/year, so obviously 12k is not enough for many people. Still makes sense to offer it as an option though.

My sister has put 3,000 miles on her Rogue in four months, and she put probably 30,000 on her old Rogue in FIVE YEARS. When you don’t do much or your car is parked all week, miles don’t add up.

That was what I was like with the Mini. 15k in the first 2.5 years, 15k in the last year.

And then there are people who live at college like me that still manage to drive 12,000-15,000 annually.

I managed to do that last year. Lots of trips to NH and home to MA really add up.

When my sister was a couple of years out of college, she leased an Acura Vigor. She put 25k on it in the first year! She hasn’t leased again. Ha.

Its tough to lease coming out of college. You have no real data to know what your yearly mileage is going to be now that you are working full time.

An ironic thing to me is the people who are like “I have student loans,” “I pay for gas and maintenance,” yet proceed to put 20,000+ miles annually on their car due to leisure trips, etc. I’m not saying that’s you, it’s just something interesting I’ve noticed.

But 50,000?! Did you come home every weekend from a school that was 300 miles away and had a 100-mile round trip work commute or something?

Pretty close. I spent six months going from Nashville to Columbus, OH on weekends for a music group and drove 80+ miles a day for school and work. Thankfully that car got around  40mpg and never broke down.
