And this is one of my designs being built. Kinda rare to float and sink pipe but it sure is neat! Bay Area folks may know this area as south San Francisco, not to far  from the airport.

It is kinda amazing to see a design get built, installed, and work correctly from the beginning. Never gets old.

my father worked on the Big Dig where they build sections of tunnels and sealed the ends, floated then into a channel and sank them. To make it more difficult, they had to sit on concrete piers which put them only a few feet above a subway tunnel.

That looks like a fun gig. I used to work for a marine construction contractor. Some days I ran a tug and barge, some days a lobster boat, some days a landing craft and some days I sat in a crane for 8 hours. I also welded and cut steel and poured concrete and butil docks and seawalls. I loved it. Every day was full of challenging problems that we had to solve quickly and effectively. Regular construction pales in comparison.

This contractor we got to recommend to the city and they are pretty damn good. Some days I wish I was running the excavator but I will probably live longer being an engineer and not an operator.

Will that waste water have some crack in it?  Because then you could say you designed the biggest crack pipe ever!!!

Yeah, the downside to my job was that I would have topped out pretty quickly. I also took a fall from a pile driving rig onto the metal deck of the barge below. I fell about 30 feet and was saved from being seriously hurt by a guy I worked with who basically broke  my fall. That scared me into considering a new plan.

I work as a preconstruction manager and estimator now, which can be interesting, but it’s not as fulfilling as looking at something and thinking “I built that with my own hands.” That said, we build mostly apartments and there is nothing interesting about it at all.

This is why lawn mowing and snow removal are identified as hobbies. I think a person with my personality needs to see results of work every once in a while.

The previous pipe had a crack in it!  A nd yes even treated wastewater has most of the pharmaceuticals still in the water. It isn’t until you get to “finished” or tertiary treatment that you get the pharmaceuticals out of the waste stream.

They still need to connect it on both ends but I was worried it wouldn’t float very well or float too much. It is designed to be neutrally buoyant  with the concrete blocks attached, then it will sink when filled with water. HDPE has the same density as water.
