I just did a very, very shortsighted thing.

I quit my job without any new plans whatsoever. I mean, that’s kind of a lie, because I have my Postmates welcome kit coming in the next few days and I still run a semi-active eBay store, but other than that, I have nothing. Starship said they’d take me if they had any positions available, but they don’t. And that’s the only place I know I would be comfortable working right now.

Here are some of the facts:

I cannot stand working with only men. That’s what drove me to the edge in the first place. It’s been like 3 years since I’ve had any female coworkers, and it fucking sucks being the outsider everywhere I go.

Beyond that, I need a safe space to begin my physical transition because I’m really getting impatient with all of this, and this job wasn’t it.

On the flip-side, I have no reliable source of income right now. It’s too late to go back on this. I can’t afford rent. I can hardly even afford to eat. I don’t know what the hell I can do.

And I really mean that in multiple ways - I don’t know what I can actually do as a job. I’ve been able to force myself through these shitty dead-end gigs until now, but I just can’t do it anymore. I’m ridiculously weak emotionally and mentally. I don’t know what I can handle.

Oh, and as far as my parents know, I still have a job. I’m more afraid to tell them I quit than I was TO quit. I doubt any of you remember 6 years ago when I failed all of my classes in the first semester of college, but this feels like that all over again, except maybe a bit worse because I know it’s not entirely due to mental health this time. I think I’m going to wait until I see my psychiatrist on Monday and I’ll ask her for advice. It feels so wrong to wait that long to tell my parents what I did, but I don’t know how to do it on my own.

Before you comment anything telling me that I shouldn’t have done this, please realize that I already know. As soon as I got off the phone with my boss, I knew I fucked up. I just can’t do anything right on my own. This is no different.

Have you looked into Kelly Connect? I know they are hiring they just got a large contract. They are work from home chat customer service, meaning those chat boxes on company websites.

There are other companies out there that do similar work. I did that work for a while recovering from a car wreck it really helped me get my shit together.

This seems like as good a reason as I’ve ever heard to leave a job—if you’ll be happier in the long run getting out of an environment you weren’t comfortable in, that can’t be a bad thing.

Some other commenters had some good ideas about potential jobs to at least keep you on your feet in the short term while you look for something longer term... maybe not any less “dead-end” ultimately but at least jobs with female coworkers or gig/work-from-home stuff. I don’t have much to add on that front, but wish you the best as you find a place where feel more comfortable.

ETA: wait, I do! Retail and food service isn’t much fun, but it might pay your rent in the short term, is always hiring somewhere, and would offer female coworkers. Picking up some shifts at a store whose products you like or a Starbucks or something isn’t the worst way to make a buck for awhile. I mention Starbucks in particular because it has a reputation as a hospitable place to work for trans people.

Sounds like you did what you needed to do to keep your head on straight. As Farscythe mentioned there are “put money in you pocket jobs” out there if you need something to put food on the table. Garden centers, restaraunts , movie theaters and that kind of thing. How does your resume look? If you need help with that let me know. I know it’s tough to think about while looking for a job, but doing some volunteer work may open new doors.

Sometimes, you’ve just got to do what you need to do.

When I was younger I quit a job because my boss was a bully. I was on anti-depressants, then one day I just said, ‘I quit’.

Sometimes your mental and physical health need to take priority over finances.

Good luck to you. I suddenly quit my job once without a plan, so you're not the only one to do this . I t was a couple months after getting married. It was a risk, but l ike you, I couldn’t stand it anymore. Looking back I regret not quitting much earlier .

I’m sure you’ll find something else soon

You’ve quit your job at a good time for finding a new one, so there’s that. Good luck!

I’m not gonna harp on you for quitting without something else lined up, but I can’t properly understand what you’re feeling now so it would be foolish of us to speculate what we would have done given  your circumstances.

Apply at a restaurant. You’ll have to do your time, but few gigs can match the camaraderie and gender diversity. Plus when you ascend to serving, that’s some nice money potentially.

I quit mine on Sunday after 2 months of continuous shit show. The good news is that everybody and their grandma is hiring right now, so apply at a bunch of places. Ask for a salary way higher than you think is called for, and apply for positions you may not normally consider.

Good luck! I f you’re starvin marvin, swallow some pride and hit up the food bank. They are there to help. If you feel bad, use some of your time to volunteer.

Mental health is the most important thing, and a bad work environment can really drain that. This may have not been the best way to get out, but I think in the long run you’ll be glad you did.

Good luck on lining up another, better, job soon!
