Years back I had 2006 LR3 SE with the V6 for a few years and absolutely loved it. Unfortunately as it was relatively new at the time (2008), it didn’t have much in the way of non -OEM support. I ended up getting rid of it after yet another (now solvable) problem.
While I presently have a 2004 land cruiser, it has 210k miles and I would like something newer, which lead me to looking at LR4s, specifically 2012+.
While I don’t get to off road as much as I want to, I do enjoy exploring Forest roads and getting off the beaten path. It also snows like hell here, and capability in blizzards is appreciated. The HD package would be ideal, but my LR3 didn’t have it, and was fine.
If I got a 2012-2013, which seemed to have the issues with the 5.0l sorted by then, it would be cheaper than a newer one, but it would be tough to find one with an HD package.
If I got a 2014+, an HD package is a requirement, but it also seems easier to find, since you can just visually look for the low-range toggle.
It seems that for $20-30k I should be able to find a good LR4 with less than 100k miles. The mpgs between the two power trains seem pretty equal too. I actually have my own garage now, and would get a GAP tool as well.
What do you guys think?

I never thought I really liked the LR4 until I helped a colleague buy one...an RRS is my itch to scratch but his LR4 is super nice.

Is the Land Cruiser showing its age with any problems or wear, or is it just that you want a change?

The stupid Defender gave me a flare up. I thought i had it under control.

Theres a guy on ExPo with a supercharged RRS on 33s that is amazing. Apparently all the supercharged ones came with HD package standard.

Both. I just did the water pump and timing chain, and I presume I’ll need to do the coils and bushings relatively soon. Not to mention being a 2004, its pretty far behind on tech and safety. I was largely problem free for years, but i’ve put about $3,600 into it in the last two years just due to age.

Just get a P38.
Might never get that itch again.

2012 LR4 owner here. I love the truck, but you have to accept that even though it’s 75% F150, parts still cost three times as much for some reason. Literally, an independent shop just last week quoted me nearly $1200 to replace power steering hoses, because the parts alone are like $850 at MSRP. For hoses. For no reason. Also expect to pay A TON more for insurance vs a Sequoia or LC.
They’re easy to work on if you’ve done work on trucks before. Obviously, you need HD tools and a 3 or 4 ton jack. Fluids aren’t that expensive if you DIY *and* you buy oil filters during a buy-a-jug-get-a-free-filter deal. Purolator is the only maker of oil filters and they’re like $40 at a parts store, yet somehow Advanced gives them to my for free when I buy $30 of oil.
Timing guides are still an issue on all 5.0l, but tend to last longer on the 12+. Air suspension does fail occasionally just from age, but isn’t that big of a deal to replace the bags.
Everything rusts. My 2012 looks the same underneath as a 2002 F150.
ETA: also around 100k you WILL need new front control arms in order to replace bushings. Budget $2500, again because it’s like $1800 in parts.

My mother has told us more than once than we are getting her 2015 LR4 V6 TDi HSE when she’s done with it.
M’lady and I are a bit mystified as to what we will do with it when it finally arrives - resale value will be minimal, dealer support is laughable and parts support hardly timely...and that’s right now. In five years time?
It's still off the road waiting for its new chassis too...five months and counting.

I think you should get that itch looked at, and wear a condom next time

A P38 might be a cure, but i’ve long lusted after the classics.

I would have thought there’d be decent support by you, but then again from your other posts, it seems like you’re pretty remote.
What’s the deal with the chassis? Out of all the issues I’ve read about, I haven’t seen anything about that.

I did the bushings on my LR3. I was under the impression that the LR4 used a more robust bushing or something, and it didn’t need to be replaced as often. Looks like Lucky8 has decently priced kits for it too. Labor is labor though.
I read up on the timing guides, and have been looking at 2013+ to be sure i would have the updated ones.

Eww. So crap to work on. Such garbage materials. Actually, that's another good way to never get that itch again. For me at least.

Maybe so, but they’re just so damn cool. Especially in the two door version.

There’s a couple of issues with Land Rover Australia. One is that they have woeful dealer coverage but the other is they have lousy parts support with many parts not held in country...and they rarely seem to use air freight to get them in country.
The chassis was damaged (front offside control arm mount) in an accidental off road excursion. The only way to legally ( and perhaps economically) repair it here is to replace the chassis (it is a single part in LR inventory). Amazingly, t he insurance company has agreed to do just that. Just waiting for LR to supply the part!

Thats so odd to me. Just based on distance you would think they would keep parts in country, or at least somewhere in the region. I’m impressed they’re going to replace the chassis. That’s a a huge endeavor.

I’ve had my 91 RRC since 2011. Bought it off the original owner with 90K on in and now at 126K. In those years I’ve spent about $10K in repairs and there’s always something to add to the list that needs attention. I really want an LR4 but can’t seem to part with my old truck. There’s just something about them....

They satisfy very different needs. The RRC is just an icon, whereas the LR4 is a modern, comfortable SUV, that is also very capable off road.
