Next I suppose you are going to tell me this ISN’T the new Boeing 797 blended wing superjet? I saw it on the Internet, I know it’s coming.

I’m so torn on BWBs. On one hand I think they look like the future, and I think airlines general rejection of widebodies (especially the big ones) is a mistake, but on the other, I greatly prefer windows seats, and I can’t help but notice that BWBs have window seats making up a much smaller percentage of passenger space.

The bigger issue would be redoing the gate infrastructure at all the airports of the world.

For me, after four million miles, it’s nice to fantasize about a completely different architecture— one that re-writes the rules for airliners by upending the ratio of “interior volume to GTOW”.
At whatever the capacity it’s nice to dream about a configuration where you are sitting inside the massive volume of the wing itself, with every seat having 40 inches of legroom and easy access to an aisle. Just seems like a better future than narrow tubes crammed with the maximum number of seats.
I always figured that, with the success of BWB bombers, “somebody” might give it a try for an airliner. Regrettably Boeing and Airbus probably have little incentive these days to take a risk.

Stubby wings for a ground- pounder just means a smaller target!

That was Alexander Kartveli’s first attempt at making a jet fighter, stuffing a jet engine in a P-47. Needless to say, it didn’t work. The Russians did something similar with the Yak 15 (a jet-powered Yak 3), and it had some limited success, probably because the pilot wasn’t sitting directly on top of the engine. However,
The tests revealed a number of problems in that the thick wing inherited from the Yak-3 limited the top speed of the aircraft, the engine exhaust damaged the surface of the airfield, the cockpit often filled with smoke from kerosene and oil that had dripped onto the engine, (Wiki)
Nevertheless, the Yak 3 turned out to be a good trainer for early jet pilots.

No, really.

To be honest, they probably should be revisited. Our infrastructure was mostly designed with the 707 and DC-9 in mind, it seems like it’s not at all optimal for loading big planes. Loading times can be quite long (granted some of that is self-inflicted pain on the airline’s part, with a dozen boarding groups, and very little attention paid to optimal placement until you get to the end of the list). I’m not sure what the answer is, but it seems like some system allowing loading at the back as well as the front could do better. The current dual jetways aren’t much help, especially as the front one is normally only used for first class passengers these days.

I always bitch about LAX, but it’s basically the same ‘form ’ it was when it opened in 1962— with waiting areas, boarding lounges and walkways scaled for a world of 80-passenger Caravelles and 105 passenger DC-9s.
Nobody is going to rebuild the world’s airports overnight, but you wish there were some effort to re-think how you get to airports, deal with security and wait to board.
United, DL and AA are trying to use this same infrastructure 60 years later when a 787 is a “small” plane to board. I don’t know what it fixes it, but as I always joke at LAX “more Wolfgang Puck cafes and Starbucks” probably isn’t going to move the huge planes through the narrow, congested alleys any faster...

Saab tried the same thing with their J 21R. I think you’ve mentioned it in your articles but I’m not sure if you’ve ever featured it.

What kind of strange pitot tube is that? Never seen one long enough to coil before. I feel like that would cause drag or unfurl and flap around and cause damage or get sucked into an engine. Poor design. Someone should have reported that.
Also how are they supposed to pressurize that cabin without any windows to seal it?

I’ll have to go check. I imagine I at least gave it a shout out for its first flight. If not, I should have. SAAB was on to the same thing that the British were with their twin boom designs such as the Vampire and the Venom. Having the engine in a central pod meant that the exhaust pipe could be shorter, allowing the full use of the early underpowered engines.
