Right, then...

After 25 years ..I finally got my private pilots license. Now I get to fly for the hell of it, instead of test prep.

...now to consider a  instrument rating...

Awesome! Welcome to the club!

I finished mine earlier this year. I started the instrument rating, but I have to rethink my approach. There’s only so much budget to dedicate to flying....

Oh yeah. I was burni ng through cash as a blinding rate...the last 2 mos has three botched attempts at a check ride...so a weeks worth of practice each... gonna chill on plane rides for a couple of weeks.

Now, how hard is instrument, so far?  Somewhere I heard that there is a sim you can buy that helps with practice without paying for a plane or CFII

Congrats. I used to dream of piloting, then I outgrew the dream. But I still cannot resist looking up when an aircraft flies over. Doesn’t matter what type it is.

Sims like xplane or what not, offer some help, but mainly in procedure repetition. 5 t’s are still good and setting up the approach, briefing it to yourself, etc then shooting the approach, all a standard and repetitive procedure. So I’m sure it’ll help as long as you do it right because practicing the wrong way just makes something to unlearn and that is harder.

In no time you’ll be telling your wife “say again? ” or "clear right" when driving.

There are plenty of ways to practice in software without paying for an airplane. Trick is that you can only log those hours if it’s a true flight sim. I started the course, missed a few classes, then struggled to get caught up. While I technically have completed ground, I really haven’t put it all together since I haven’t had any flight time actually practicing with an instructor.
