Smash and Grab.
I was fortunate that I hadn’t packed the truck to leave Houston for the weekend. However, they did grab my laptop bag with my work laptop, a couple of external hard drives, my personal iPad, my monogrammed gadget bag, a small Olympus camera, and worst of all, a couple of weeks of work that hadn’t been backed up!
That may not be the worst news. The floods yesterday created a healthy demand for rental cars and all I could get was a rental-spec Fiesta. I know some of you guys like these, but I feel like I’m in a clown car. I’m tempted to drive north or west tomorrow and see if I can find something better.
One thing I’m not doing is driving East. Why? Well, I-10 is closed indefinitely. A barge crashed into the bridge over the San Jacinto and took out a couple of pilings.

With additional road closures due to flooding and traffic being diverted, the expected drive time is seven hours. Seven. Hours. It took nearly three hours after lunch to get the break-in reported and find a new rental. They’re expecting even more rain, so there’s a good chance it would take even longer to get back. So, now I’m stuck in a hotel for the weekend. At least I was able to grab a loaner laptop from the office so I can start rebuilding the files I lost.
What a day.

Ouch lost files suck. In theory my work stuff is supposed to be getting backed up to OneDrive, but I have a suspicion that’s not actually working, probably should investigate. A lot of it is actually on Salesforce servers anyway.
I’m pretty sure Oppo likes the Fiesta ST, with significantly less support for the base model. Me though, I’d take the Fiesta over the F-150 every time , driving big vehicles is no fun. I drive a mid-sized sedan, and it feels too big to me.

Much of my work involves gigantic file sets. Everything gets backed up when I’m directly connected to our office network. I haven’t been to the mothership in a couple of weeks, so it’s a couple of weeks out of date.
I have a WRX at home and the Fiesta makes it feel big. I like having a big vehicle for the long drive between Houston and Baton Rouge every week. It’s easy to see traffic conditions, its super comfortable, and it has plenty of space for my stuff. Parking it is a pain during the week, but I’ve figured out where to park to make it as easy as possible. A part of me is glad that I’m not traveling home this weekend. It means I won’t have to work the hamsters to death on the freeway.

That low-life bastard! I hate when people think they can rob someone just because of a natural disaster. Peoples lives are bad as it is, at least you dont live in there.
That m ade me think of this ACDC song. appropriate :P

Man, that is a bad day. My heart goes out to you. It’s bad enough getting violated by a thief without losing anything of value.
Stay safe.

Don’t be jealous. I only get to drive it a few miles a month.

Damn, that is a couple of times for you in the last few months, right?
Glad you were safe through the storms. Thursday was pretty stressful in Houston, but we were lucky in Meyerland this time.
Just to be safe I moved the E28 to my parents house. Replacing the Sudbury, Pathfinder or minivan is easy, but it took me a while to find the BMW.

Yeah, second time. The first time they didn’t take anything because there was nothing to take. It’s good to hear you and yours were safe too. The hard thing for me is the lost files. The rest is just stuff. The files were both personal and work-related. I’ve been wracking my brain for hours trying to remember where everything is backed up. This sucks.

Theft can happen in Houston with or without natural disasters. One office I worked at in Houston actually had a guard tower so that security could keep an eye on the whole parking lot at once. And we weren’t in a remotely bad neighborhood or anything (in Houston, thieves, like everyone else, are happy to commute).
