I’ll have a beer. And one for my horse.
Any big plans for the weekend? It’s a ballet weekend for me. No, I’m not dancing. Ballet Austin is dancing to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . You might recognize it as the generic soundtrack to lots of Medieval action movies, including Excalibur . It’s an awesome piece, if you’ve never heard it. One show tonight, two tomorrow, and another on Sunday afternoon. My son is headed to McAllen for a marching competition. They have to be at school at 4:30 tomorrow morning, and will be home about the same time Sunday morning. That’s a long bus ride.
Y’all have a safe weekend.

Regrettably, I’m going to be behind the wheel for 10+ hours tomorrow
, as my 90 year old great uncle passed away two weeks ago
and I’m going to a service. Korean War vet, surgeon, Texan, something of a legend.

I’m sorry to hear that. My condolences. I’m ready for a road trip, though, just not under circumstances like that. Safe travels.

Have you run your hand inside the tire to see if there is something stuck through it that is puncturing the new tubes? That happened to me once. It was a thorn I picked up on a trail that wasn’t showing on the outside of the tire.

The trip to the coast at least passes through some interesting country. I wonder if the ‘64 Galaxie police car with red “gumball machine
” light is still parked
along the route like it was a few years ago... lots of neat sights of cars and things.

I almost went to grad school there. I ended up going elsewhere, and things worked out well in the long run, but I think I would have enjoyed it there.

I’ve certainly heard parts of Camina Burana, but never the whole thing. I’m listening to it now. I also looked up the lyrics translated. Holy shit!

Yeah, the lyrics are pretty wild. Some ancient Latin text or something, at least in some ancient dialect. The influence of that piece is far-reaching, especially in movie music. Listen to the soundtrack of the original Conan movie. That’s one of my all-time favorite scores.

Being a library nerd, I had to read up on it. The piece is a selection of 24 poems out of a collection of like 2400 from 13th century Bavaria about what a bunch of Monks, medieval scholars and students were doing in their drunken free time at the tavern.
Drunken tales of revelry and strip poker at the tavern? Check.
Love, love lost, lust and virgins so full of desire for each other they’re about to explode? Check.
A take on fate and fortune dark enough to make Townes Van Zandt seem like he was blowing sunshine out his ass? Check.
It’s awesome. I’ll have to checkout that soundtrack.

The p re-concert lecture is going on right now. I think I’ll go out there and share this with the audience. Infinitely more interesting than what the musicologist is prattling in about.

Vastly more people would come see this performed if they knew what they were actually singing about. They also wouldn’t bring their kids.
The next time you all perform this, you ought to see of they can project a real-time translation of the lyrics for the audience.
Thanks for posting this. I clicked on the BBC link in your post. It had some very limited subtitles, but it was enough to catch my eye and send me down the glorious rabbit hole of figuring out exactly what I was listening to.
I had no idea previously that it was a nerdy take on 13th century sex, drugs and rock n’ roll (so to speak) Bavarian style.

The projected subtitles are called “supertitles,” and they are not included in this performance. The ballet company told the patrons that this is an “all ages” production. There is a children’s chorus that sings. I can assure you that most people have no idea what is actually being sung.
Glad you enjoyed it. It’s a gas to play.

That BBC performance of it also had a children’s choir. I don’t know if they only sing part of it (maybe the more innocuous movements about spring?), but I’m amused at the juxta position of a children’s choir singing about drunken revelry and unbridled sexual desire in Latin.

The children’s choir sings one number, close to the end of the piece.

That made me spray coffee on my monitor at the thought of a children’s choir singing L atin lyrics that translate along the lines of “i f a boy with a girl ,tarries in a little room, happy is their coupling. Love rises up, and between them ,prudery is driven away, ineffable game begins in their limbs, arms and lips” or things like “my virginity makes me frisky, my simplicity holds me back...”

I’ve seen that. It’s good.
Here’s a somewhat more modern take, an electronic version by Ray Manazrek, formerly of The Doors. I’m not sure where he manages to cut 25 minutes out of the piece. He probably eliminates some of the repeats.
