What grit sandpaper should I use to remove this rust/crud?

Thats on the steering knuckle where the lower ball joint fits into. I’ve never had to remove that severe of a buildup. What should I use?

IF you have a wire wheel for a drill that will work well.  Ir anything over like 120 grit, I would think.  Something not overly aggressive so you don’t score the surfaces.

I’ll see if I can find a wire wheel.

120, gotcha! Thanks

120ish is a guess...I’d test a small are a and see how it goes. I would think you want to limit the amount of scoring.  Good luck!

To echo Sovande, first Id try a wire wheel or brush and maybe some CLR or something. Then once I knocked the big scale off Id go to sandpaper, no rougher than 120, but if the wire wheel/brush does its job then 240/400.  You dont want to tear the surface up too much.

dremel/wire wheel. Otherwise anything 220-120 will work.

Emory paper would be a good idea to get rid of surface rust.

I’ll echo everyone else with the wire wheel but I’d hit it with a wire brush by hand first to get off the big chunks.

A sanding block with some 120-150ish emory cloth would probably make quick work of it.
