— TRUMP PULLED A WAD OF CASH out of his pocket, when answering about a Reuters photo published Wednesday, which showed 20-dollar bills coming out of his pants: “I don’t carry a wallet because I haven’t had to use a credit card in a long time. I do like leaving tips to the hotel. I like to carry a little something. I like to give tips to the hotel. I’m telling you, maybe a president’s not supposed to do it, but I like to leave a tip for the hotel, etc., etc. Oh, that’s funny. So the jacket was blowing up?” (Whilst gaggling with reporters aboard Air Force One, a s reported in today’s Politico Playbook)
I never fail to tip Housekeeping after a hotel stay.

I never fail to tip Housekeeping after a hotel stay.
Why? I don’t like the notion that you should have to tip some one for merely doing their job. I don’t mean in regards to restaurants , but other functions such as house keeping.

I didn’t realize this until recently but tipping for hotel staff is actually expected, and from my understanding some states tax housekeeping employees with the expectation that they get tips, but I could be mistaken about that. Almost the same situation as tipping at a restaurant

Because they’re probably making $10/hr and have to clean up after me. I leave them $3 and I’ve given them a 30% raise for that hour they spent on my room.
Nothing says, “Thank you for scrubbing the toilet and the shower after me” like a few Georges.
Also, tipping is optional, right?

I posted about tipping house keeping a while back and I was surprised it was a thing and apparently expected. I have never tipped hotel cleaning staff. I figure for $250/night they can afford to pay their employees a reasonable wage.

My housekeeping “tip” is that we normally don’t use them until Day 3 or 4 (beyond a 4-day stay, we normally call them in for a cleanup). I just don’t like strangers in my room in general, plus it just seems oddly opulent to me to have someone clean up after me every day.
I know that’s a false economy in some cases because they’re hourly and that’s potentially 30 minutes’ less work for them that day. Obviously if everyone did this, the housekeeping staff would be cut in half.

You would certainly think so! I always try to leave some unopened leftover food in the minifridge with a note that they can take whatever they want.
It just feels weird to me to tip cash to
anyone who is not overtly making server wages. Even then, I’m picky. 15% is my median, but more often than not I’m doing either 10% (meh) or 20% (nice!)....or 0% (horrid and I’m never coming back). That’s the way it’s supposed to work.

There is so much societal pressure to tip. It should just be called a service charge. That said, I tip for appreciation. I tip housekeeping because I tend to use more towels and mess than the average person.

I don’t always do it, but if we spend a couple nights in a place, I try to leave a few bucks. I think the point is this: people in the service industry are often doing some of the toughest work for the least pay. If you have the means to make their day a little better by leaving a few dollars, it’s a very nice gesture.
By no means is there an obligation to do so (unlike in a sit-down restaurant situation, where the server is likely making less than min. wage per hour, and very dependent on tips for most of their pay
).

I think he has been known as a decent tipper from way back, seem to remember he did a few thousand at a restaurant once. Part of it could be to avoid being embarrassed if someone went public with a bad tip or no tip at all, he's been a celebrity of some sort for a long time.

I look at it this way- I try to avoid being a pain in the ass, while a depressing number of other people seem to go out of their way to be enormous fucking pigs when they know someone else is cleaning up after them. So by 1) not making a mess of my room and 2) leaving a decent tip when I check out, hopefully I’m making an improvement in their day of having to clean up after animals.

They can afford to, but likely don’t...
The median salary for housekeepers is $19,570 per year, or about $9.41 per hour, according to data for 2012 from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Housekeepers who work in major metropolitan areas tend to make a higher average wage.

It’s nice to have a made bed, but it never inconvenienced me that much. Let’s just say when we stay in a hotel, we basically move in. Stuff everywhere. Housekeeping would hate it.

There’s an intimacy about the whole thing...
Last year, when my daughter got married, the two younger sisters, as well as two girlfriends, shared a room and got dressed for the shenanigans wedding and as you might imagine, left the room an absolute disaster. I left $15 or 20 for the housekeeping person that morning. Maybe tipping is less about him or her tipped, than it is about the t ipper.

This is something that my wife and I actively teach to our boys. We travel often, and have stayed in many hotels. We always clean up after ourselves as much as we can. Cleaning staff have enough to do without dealing with our mess.
I remember once when I was young making a mess and when my dad said something about it I said, “They’ve got people to clean that up.” I received perhaps the iciest look of my life, and learned my lesson.

The other two replies here are correct, and from my understanding it’s only really expected when you leave a mess, or make them do more cleaning than turning over the room and replacing towels. If you have them clean your room every day (as opposed to fresh towels and nothing else) they’re essentially being your maid for minimum wage, which I would argue is not in their job description.

I'm not disagreeing. When I'm at a place where I can tip (which is really only a restaurant or when I get my hair cut), I tip well. But, I will say that I think it's a crummy system. Pay people a better wage to begin with.

200 plus nights so far this y ear (travel 5-7 days a week for work). About 320 last year.
I have had about 20% of those at $ 250 plus. Company pays every dim e. Most of them have been 175 or so. Category 2- 4 Hilton, Marriott, IHG, Hyatt. As per rate and deal and availabi lity.
Never -ever tipped for House keeping.
Always get fresh towels.
Always get fresh linen.
After a 13 hr day, I’d like to walk into a brand new room, every single night.
And no I am not a cheap ass. Part of travelling 100% of the times means, I eat out almost every single meal. Tip 20% - irrespective of service. $10 lunch, $25-30 dinner (with a drink ), basically $5-10 / day in tips at restaurants.
Coming back to the room service, a s part of my growing up, I always made up my bed first thing when I woke up. My sister and I were actually rewarded for making the perfect bed. S o house kee ping doesn’ t have to do m uch, even after my 6th nite in the same room.

As someone who has spent more time living in hotels than I’d prefer, I always leave $5 for housekeeping. But I also only have them come in every 3 to 4 days if its a longer stay.
I’m also not messy per se, like the room isn’t gross. But if I traveling alone I have a tendency to flail in my sleep and muck the sheets all up.
Also, it pays dividends. One time I bought silverware because I was in an extended stay place for 6 months and they used to do my dishes for me. I felt bad so I tried to hid my dirty dishes so I could do them later myself. They would seek them out and still do them for me! I have some other good hookup stories like that, extra soap and things, but the dishes took the cake.
