Kinja'd!!!

So when outlet house flooded back in July, our cabinets in the dining room were damaged. So we ordered new ones. And waited. And then they showed up, and one was damaged. So reordered. And wait. And now we’re ready for our installer to handle it tomorrow, and we’re looking them over, and goddamnit, do they look a little small? Fuck. They were supposed to be the same thing from home Depot, who made the original ones. Bit they fucked up and ordered the cabinets a size smaller, for some unknown reason. We could bitch at home Depot and have them fix this, but we are done. S o fucking done.

S we have one of the cabinets that they sent originally with cosmetic damage. Wife came.up with the odeayof cutting it up, and piecing it together, smaller, for a little wine cabinet. Is that crazy? How would I disassemble the thing intact? Help!

when you say smaller, in what way?

pics for all this would go a long way, before and after photos

Yea, you can cut it up and all that but its maybe not easy but might be depending on what you are trying to end up with and how it needs to look

Depth and height are correct, width is wrong. But I have a 30 inch wide cabinet I could turn into 12 inch wide wine cabinet, and shove it into the corner where it would be hidden

yea, you could easily cut it up.

Kinja'd!!!

do it so the side that goes against the wall is the side you are messing with. you can pre-drill a hole for a screw and use a larger bit about the size of the sc rew head so that the screw will either sit flush or recess and you can cover the screw head with filler or just say fuck it if its against the wall and no one will see it. get some good wood glue and clamp it all together (or lay it on its side and sit on it over night)

Prefab cabinets are a bitch to resize, they are assembled with glue and staples and the thinnest shittiest wood this side of the Mississippi. It might just be easier to pitch it and order the size you want.

This is how we shrink cabinets.

My wife is mildly gloating as you suggested the exact cuts she did. That’s probably what we’re going to do.

Your island looks amazing, by the way!

Easier, absolutely. But this started two and a half months ago. We got the old ruined cabinets in the living room holding up the countertop, the new undersized cabinets in the dining room waiting to be installed. This would be the second time "they can be installed tomorrow!" We're done. This will be fixed and installed tomorrow

Yeah, it’s definitely doable. Thats a great idea. I  recommend getting a kreg jig and use pocket screws to put it back together , but honestly, if the side that got cut off and put back together is buried against the wall, you can simply just carefully predrill and screw through the face of that side. Use some wood glue too when you put it back together.

haha and i was right. you started off talking about jigs and stuff. CashRewards is probably like why do i have to do a dance with screws in my pockets to build a cabinet?

Circular saw is my best saw. But I wonder about clearance cutting the floor. Might have to go through the bottom? I got a crappy jig saw, and a hand saw

a curcular saw would be the way to go. use clamps to clamp down a straight edge or 2x4 to keep the line straight. rotate the box after you cut each side so you dont worry about the floor

Kregjig4lyfe!!! I get so exited to show it to people who’ve never seen a pocket hole joint, haha.

My mom got me one for Christmas a few years ago. She was like I don’t know what it is, but your brother said you need it if you’re getting into wood working...My brother is a carpenter.

They’re so good!

I used to feel guilty for using them, like I was cheating or something. Then I bought some very expensive American made bedroom furniture ... It's all put together with pocket hole jigs.

A circular saw from the back/bottom will do the trick.
