I am being interviewed in the local news in the morning. Our kids are awesome that they did this petition when the district took away their practice field

Pardon me, I try to avoid cursing on Oppo as much as possible, but I think it’s warranted here.
But what the actual fuck is wrong with a school to say “people are using the field and it’s ruining it ” instead of saying “oh sweet, our youth are passionate about something constructive, we should let this grow?”
Fuck them.
Also, fuck football. It’d rather watch the band play.

The bands here in Texas usually practice in the parking lot (it’s got purpose painted yard lines and the ones they practice on have to be cleared by a specified time). This is usually done for a few reasons:
1. the football fields aren’t always at the schools and are often shared between schools
2. the practice fields are usually being used by the sports teams
3. marching on a grass playing field can damage the field (think of footpaths being worn in by just walking in tennis shoes over and the same path by many people)
The marching band should have a place to practice, the playing field isn’t always (or even usually) the best place.

The school district taking away a marching bands practice area is one of the most boneheaded moves I’ve heard of lately. How is a marching band “ruining” a field? Just stupid. Sorry, I’d be more eloquent, but I’m at least 4 beers in at the moment.

You should organize a strike of the next football game (I know how ironic this sounds). Once everyone realizes how fucking boring a high school football game is without a band, they’ll let them keep practicing.
Also, how the hell does a marching band cause more damage to a football field than a football team?
My high school football field sucked, mostly because people kept bleaching giant penises into the grass.

That is absurd. Like really fields are meant to be used, if someone is using them, that’s good. Most activities can damage fields, and I’d guess marching band is relatively low damage per person. Seems like either they should live with it (you have NFL games being played on dirt (though I guess maybe they just played the last one), I’m pretty sure high school teams can practice on a non-pristine field), find a suitable alternative for the band to practice on, or bite the bullet replace the field with a harder-wearing artificial turf (though from my own high school experience, the soccer teams will hate this)).

A story I was once told involved Drill kicking the Cadet marching band off the parade square once for being trash, and then yelling at them “Do you know what marching is without music? Walking! Play better!”

That’s kind of insane. Marching bands start practicing when temps are still in the high 100’s here. Practicing on a black top would be suicide.
My fields growing up were always pretty wrecked, so it’s hard for me to imagine a band messing them up. It’s a gridiron, not a putting green.

Y ou need a place to practice that is suitable for the band.
No space, no practice, no band.
Ask them if they want a band, the band needs to practice and they need a space to do it in.
Put it to them if they don’t want you using the field, they need to find a suitable place for the band to practice but that you and the band ultimately have final approval for any found space.

I hate how unequally schools treat different sports and activities.
Football needs new jerseys? Here let me bend over, take what you want.
The band needs a place to practice? Figure it out, not my problem.

Our lots are concrete and temperatures can be over 100F until the start of October (in fact there have been Halloweens where it was over 100F and costumes had to be chosen for the heat).
I’ve done autocrosses on as phalt with temps as high as 114F (you’d sink into the softened asphalt a little, and a guy in race shoes burned his feet since the shoes are more like thick socks), and I’ve raced with temps as high as 111F. It gets hot here, you either deal with it or move.
