This is why I put off replacing my leaky tire for so long

$155 for a single tire, and it’s not even a good brand. The local place rips you off because they’re the only tire shop on the island. There’s no competition to keep prices low.

ETA: I s hould note that I swapped the spare on myself and just dropped the single wheel off with them, so they didn’t have to do any labor getting it off and on the car.

That’s not a good deal, but I’ve seen far worse. I’m friends with one of my local tire shops, so they’ll mount and balance a set of tires for $40 (or $30 if I pay cash and the wheels aren’t mounted on the car).

This place will only mount tires that they've sold to you

Wow, I think I pay a $2 -$3 dispoal fee . Everything else on there looks fine. Maybe a wee bit steep on the tire, but not obnoxious.

See my edit: they didn't even have to remove it from the car. I dropped the wheel off with them.

That's only $80 USD. I paid almost 50% more than you.

I stand by my comment — every time I take a wheel off, I ask for a discount. The usual reply is “getting it on the lift is quick and easy, all the real work is the M&B”

In reality, we should get discounts for walkins like that. I usually do it just for the time savings (so I can leave and drive around on the spare instead of waiting 1-3 hours)

Most places will only mount brand new tires (and often they try not to mount ones they don’t sell), but refusing to mount brand new tires is shady and bad business.

I’m glad I don’t live on an island and I have choices (I buy 4-6 sets of tires every year). Is there a BBB to complain to, or a way to ingratiate yourself with the owner/manager/staff to get a discount?

There’s an element of incompetence in play too. I dropped it off at 4pm yesterday. They said it would be ready at 9 a.m. I came in to pick it up at 1:30pm and they had forgotten to balance it, and I had to wait while they did that.

Wow, that’s weird and sucky. I was curious so I took a look at who tire rack partners with, but they want you to go all the way to Hyannis, which clearly is not very convenient (or cheap) .

I think what I will do at s ome point is go to Used Tire Warehouse in Wareham and get a set of 4 80% tread tires mounted for like $200. This tire can be the new spare since mine is pretty old.

$200 and the $70 ferry trip is cheaper than replacing two tires locally

I’m losing pressure in one of mine too.  I took it to a shop, but they didn’t find a hole to patch.  I’m probably gonna have to get a new one, and mine cost almost twice yours. :(

I was hoping to just patch it but I took it off and found the back sidewall was badly cracked.

It was a bad leak, like 10psi/week.

My wife’s van had a similar problem. Puncture too close to the sidewall. I posted about it here. Augh.

The tire shop took mine off and said it was just not sealed well on the rim.  It’s still losing close to what yours is though. I’ve been having way too much trouble with tires in this last year.  My sympathies go out to you.

Puncture too close to the sidewall.

I bet, if you looked, you wouldn’t have too much trouble finding a place that would patch it anyway. This is TX, after all.

My local place refused after all of Oppo decreed that no reputable shop would do it.  That was good enough for me just before a 900 mile road trip.

You can soap test the valve, just spray some dish soap solution on the valve, the wheel and tire, I bet you find the leak.

More likely to get a shank and skank there than a tire.

My valve stem failed fantastically two years ago . You should be able to wiggle it around and hear air escaping (especially after refilling it). Soap trick, yes. But mine was bad...

Rear main seal. It’s not bad (quart every six months, about) but it’s enough to make working under the car icky.

My spare is pretty old, so this will probably become the new spare and I’ll go to the mainland and get a matching set of four decent ones for cheaper

I’ve had 2 vehicles with Kelly tires. Both of them felt like utter shitboxes to drive, they sounded like they were falling apart going down the road. Changed the tires and boom, they felt perfectly normal, the noises all went away.
