I am going on a trip to the Florida Panhandle, wish me luck. Hopefully if a hurricane doesnt get me first, then floridaman doesnt eat me either. I’ll have a couple of weekends to go find stuff to do so if anyone has better suggestions than check out the beach and try to not sweat to death, I will listen! Apparently there is a cool bouldering gym nearby in Destin as well as some decent food options. But I hope I can find somewhere to hike (yes I know there arent hills there) and hopefully not get eaten alive by mosquitoes. I thought about finding an autocross for my rental car but didnt see anything going on nearby while I am there.

But, hey, who hasn’t danced drunk and naked around a pagan fire before drinking and driving?

2 weeks, that’s almost long enough for you to be called Florida man too.

I remember a story from a couple of years back where a homeless man was warming his naked groin over a barbecue in a park while saying, and I quote, “LOOKS LIKE WE’RE HAVING A WEENIE ROAST”.

Strangely, I don’t think that was in Florida.

It’s not that bad. Stick to the more touristy beach areas where there are a lot of cops. Less meth heads and old people there. I also recommend the areas outside of major cities and on the east coast. There are some really nice and quiet areas.

And the crocodiles. Florida actually has a small area with crocodiles in it and they are not friendly (as you can probably guess). They aren’t as aggressive as other crocs, but they aren’t exactly friendly either.

T hat’s really cool. I like hiking and trail walking though so not sure how cool I would find it if I spotted that while walking a path. Ha!

I spent nine months stationed in Orlando but I never made it up to the panhandle. Central Florida was plenty weird enough once you got away from the tourist trail.   I wonder if the number of strip clubs per capita increases or decreases as you go north?

If you're into aircraft, the museum at Pensacola is pretty awesome. They have a bunch of naval aircraft on display and some cockpits you can climb into.

Bears are very common here. I always take bear spr a y with me on bike rides and hikes. That being said I am terrified of sharks.

We just spent Labor day weekend in the Destin area. It’s a short drive up to Alabama if that is of interest and you can hit the highest point in FL along the way (700 some odd feet above sea level). The Pensacola air museum is worth stopping by as is the armament museum at/near Elgin AFB ( http://www.afarmamentmuseum.com/ ). We took the opportunity to do a bit of fishing in the gulf, if you have the time, money or inclination I thought it was fun . Other than that we hung around my sister-in-law’s pool.

Oh yeah, no, sharks definitely give me cause for hesitation. I don’t like to go out into the ocean on any of the small things that float.

Fl orida has tiger and bull sharks. I’m content standing and playing in the waves in chest high water. But I would like to kayak along the coast som e day.

If you take the air museum suggestion, I must implore you to stop for donuts at Milton Quality Bakery in Milton, just east of Pensacola, just a few minutes off I10. It’s one of the few things I miss about living there.

DISNEY WORLD BRO!

But seriously, if it were me, I’d stay bolted in my hotel room/Airbnb as to not get killed.

Can I have your cars if you’re killed?

I hate staying holed up in my hotel room whilest on work travel. It is incredibly depressing to do that for me. Might as well make the best of it, especially the weekend when im not working anyways. Its like a free vacation on those days, regardless of the fact that I dont get to choose where said vacation is lol. Disneyworld is like 6 hours away so thats out of the picture. Gulf coast is supposed to be a cool place to be at and is different than anywhere else I have ever been at least.

The positive of sharks is that if you dont go in the water, there is a near zero chance of being eaten by one (sharknado). A crafty enough bear could get you whereever you may roam. I think given any given encounter with either, I would still prefer the bear though. At least the bear will likely run away assuming its not starving to death nor has children around. And if you carry a shotgun or bear mace, you are good anyways. I cant really do shit about a shark, even though its not very likely to try to eat me unless for the same extreme hunger reasons.

The rule in Florida as I have heard is: “The more north you go, the more South it gets”

All you need for a sharknado is a chainsaw.

There is no place like LA (lower Alabama). The beaches in the panhandle are actually really nice. I would also recommend checking out a bar called Floribama on the Florida/Alabama border. I don’t know if the show is based off it, or if it’s still there. I never saw the show or actually went to the bar. I hear entertaining things though. If you drink, you should prob hit a beach bar and have the panhandle’s signature drink. I think it's called a bushwhacker? Basically a mudslide with blended banana if I am recalling correctly. You might be able to find a place to ocean kayak too.

The sour cream donuts are heavenly, just call ahead and make sure they have some. They’ll probably make some if  not.

Burrito del Sol in Ft. Walton Beach is excellent for Mexican food . If you’ve got the time for a trip to Pensacola the Navy Air Museum is awesome. Closer to Destin is the Air Force Armaments Museum at Eglin AFB that is pretty cool too. They’ve got an SR-71 and some other neat stuff to look at.
