B ut those that do, really get it. I crossed paths today with an older dude (50's?) Riding a chopper. Not a stupid OCC stretched rediculous style bike, but an old school 60's style chopper. The kind you can actually ride. He had a sun beaten look to him, that suggested he spends a lot of time on two wheels. Now that grizzled looking chopper riding helmetless dude and I couldn’t be much farther apart in terms of what we ride and what we wear while riding. But when we saw each other and made eye contact, he gave me a huge smile and a big thumbs up. That’s what it’s all about! It doesn’t matter what you’re riding, just get out there and ride! And be excellent to each other.

Also, I finally upgraded to a full face helmet.

Fantastic- I love scooters and always give them the wave when on my bike.

PS - it always freaks me the hell out when I cross the river from MO to IL a nd see people riding without a helmet.

A fair number of bikers give me a wave, but definitely less than half.

If I had to guess, like 3/4 of the people I see riding don't wear a helmet. It's crazy.

There’s two old crusty bikers that live a block over from me, who sit on their porch all day drinking beer. Whenever I ride past them on one of my vintage Hondas they wave me down to talk bikes. They’ve given me the whole history of all the guys with bikes that have lived in our neighborhood over the last fifty years. Apparently Gary Wells grew up in my neighborhood. It doesn’t matter that I’m on a fucking Honda.

My friends always giv  shits to scooter riders, i dont because they have never seen a Honda Dio. I always give scooter riders the same respect as “real bike” rider, at the end of the day you are on two wheels and face the same dangers as me..

That’s awesome!

My buddy was out tooling around a couple years ago on his 50cc Zuma, when he decided to stop at a local bar for a beer. A few minutes later, a huge biker looking dude sat next to him, pointed at his helmet sitting on the bar, and asked, “That your scooter outside?”

My buddy took a deep breath, expecting to get a bunch of shit, and said, “Yep.”

The dude then responded, “That’s fucking awesome, scooters are so much fun,” and then  proceeded to tell him about his collection of vintage Vespas.

My 10 day road trip didn't do me any favors in terms of weight loss, but as of this morning I'm less than 10 lbs away.

I love my motorcycles, but some of the most fun I’ve ever had on the road, two-wheeled or four, has been on scooters. You can’t NOT smile while riding the damn things!

And good on that old rider you encountered. He clearly gets it.

I’ve got a buddy with a ruckus that won’t wear a helmet and I worry. It’s incredible to me that Michigan went backwards from mandatory helmets to not requiring them anymore. I enjoy your  posts and am glad you’re wearing one!

Think of all those potential organ donors being lost if there were mandatory helmet laws!

I’m not sure if Illinois ever had a helmet law, but I always wear mine. I’m the only income for my family, so it’s really important that I don’t die!

A couple years ago, I talked my buddy into impulse buying a 50cc Zuma while we were at Road America, from a race mechanic who was selling it. I unleashed a monster in him that I had no idea was there, and he proceeded to ride that thing hundreds of miles that summer ... But he didn't own a helmet. I kept hounding him to buy one, and he was insisting he was going to do so, but kept coming up with lame excuses as to why he couldn't get to the motorcycle shop before they closed. Finally one day I picked him up when the shop was open, and dragged him there. He does actually wear it now, but man was he stubborn about getting it.

It’s about a 75% suc cess rate of getting the wave back while riding the Ruckus. I’ll give about half of that 25% the benefit of the doubt that they just didn’t see me. I’ve taken t he Ruckus to bike nights at the local places, and it’s never a dull moment. Surprisingly , most of them say they started with some sort small bike, w hether it be old scooters, or the Coleman  minibikes.

That’s a good rate! I’m probably under half for wave-backs. I’ve never taken it to a bike night. Well, not really. My buddy and I rode  our Zumas to the Speedway gas station across from Indy Motor Speedway the night before the 500 this year.  That place is always bike central that night.  We didn’t stay and socialize though, just got gas and went back to riding around.
