But at least I have some nice photos from a recent drive home when I pulled over to let a slow person get ahead enough to not be in my damn way on one of my favorite canyon roads.
I recently installed a nice upgraded radiator but of course I am not done with cooling system problems. I now have a hose at the rear of the engine that has sprung a leak in dramatic fashion. I believe it has been a slow leak for a couple of days since I couldn’t trace it but it smelled slightly like hot water (not running any coolant in there, but the water wetter has a scent at least and residual coolant still smells anyways). Now it’s definitely obviously leaking as I parked at home after dinner and the loud hissing followed by puddle of water easily traced back to a hose. Upon a quick Google-fu ths turned out to be one of the smaller hoses running about amongst the oil cooler and the front/rear of the engine. These don’t look fun to replace but such is life on a car with 250,000 miles. The new higher pressure rad and cap probably caused this hose to fail so I’ll for sure replace any of the old hoses that I haven’t yet replaced. Time to drain and fill my cooling system for the fourth time this year, h ooray!
Anyways more pictures.

better to have replaced all the hoses in one go
HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles

That car does not look like it has 250,000 miles. Looks like it has 10.

Well, that's a pain. Yeah, best to replace all the hoses.

Well that's the plan now. But usually those small hoses don't get replaced just because of the pain it takes to do so. I did the top and bottom hose and the heater hoses on the other side were replaced by previous owner.

If only that didn't entail a head gasket change on this car.. I mean that's what the Internet tells me at least and I don't really want to test that theory unless I had a reason to replace that anyways.

The different head gaskets on the 01+'s? Yeah, I don't know about that

From what I understand Mazda attempted to “fix” the cooling issues by using a headgasket which distributed the coolant better in the 01+. The coolant reroute might still “work” with it anyways but I have seen enough suggestions saying that switching to the NB1 gasket is needed. Rerouting the coolant as is would cause different cooling issues that I am worried about. I dont like doing mods to a car if I am not sure about side effects like that.

Sounds like you have it under control - and definitely to them all while you’re at it.

Now that youre living down here, we should plan a legitimate drive. Probably after I fix my leaks and you finish the suspension on the vette. Then itll be a good time to go break test everything. Ill be on work travel the next couple of weeks but I should have the weekend of the 5th to fix my car and then totally free columbus day weekend to do something cool with cars since my girlfriend will be in Poland. She gets to go to way cooler places for work while I get stuck with visiting Floridaman land.

That weekend should be good for me. Probably have all the parts settled and adjusted and broken parts replaced maybe other services finished too.
