I don’t have a big enough spanner or socket to tighten the 40mm pivot nuts on my tractor’s grader blade.
I had to borrow a 2ft crescent off the manlier men in the tool room at work .

I tried to do a brake job thursday but was stymied because the biggest allen key I had was 1mm smaller than what I needed

I have a 1.5in socket and an adapter to put it on my torque wrench. I bought them for one specific nut on a trailer hitch . I have never touched the nut, the adapter, or the socket again , and, more importantly, I have never actually used that hitch . Sometimes b orrow is a better move than buy .

Can't tell whether you were spannered or nutted by this job...

Use the head of a bolt with two nuts on the other end of it.

40mm is pretty dang big. I’ve got a fairly serious collection of metrique and it tops out below 40mm

Ever read “Command and Control” about The Damascus Incident?
What a fluster cluck from start to finish. Those poor damn techs going down in the silo in haz mat suits and little else. Wow. And a few clue-free generals calling the shots from hundreds of miles away.
At least the Permissive Action Locks worked on the device itself...

That Harbor Freight Mega 3/4" Socket Set doesn’t come out often, but it does make short work of such dilemmas...

Ditto. I run to 36mm. The only other time I’ve ever needed more was for the halfshaft spline nuts on my Citroen, which were 50mm and needed a 3ft crescent with a pipe on the end.

My general rule is “if you need it once, buy it, because you’ll need it again”. But I can’t envision needing this particular one again - or at least not urgently enough to not be able to borrow from work - and big stuff is expensive stuff.

I generally agree with you, although after needing something really big, that I didn’t have, for about the third time ... I decided to take the plunge on a Harbor Freight 3/4" drive socket set. I think it was about $40 or $ 50 with coupon. I've been on the lookout for a decent used 3/4" drive ratchet since then.
