1) Well, this was pretty inevitable.... but....
2) ....being an Audi A8 zealot, I LOVE the Phaeton.
I hope somebody posts a journal someday of how a 20 year old Phaeton can break your heart as you take night jobs driving Uber and sell plasma to try to keep your Phaeton on the road.

That’s unfortunate. I think it’d just be cheaper at that point to go with a full aftermarket air setup like AccuAir.

I wouldnt rely on wisdom from luxury car forums, the owners always air on the side of oem is superior, do it right the first time, take it to the dealer, and fix it before it breaks. All of which isnt economically relevant when a cars $1000 away from being scrapped.
I dont see why you cant replace just 1 strut, people probably say do them all at once because if 1 goes then they all are suspect for failure soon.(I dont know how the system functions so this is guess work). You can purchase 1 strut at a time so what I’d do is buy the refurbished unit off ebay for $550, send the core back and end up paying $375.

All four struts come out to about $ 1600 for the set. It will cost considerably more if they have a dealer do it.
If they knew this was inevitable then they should have set aside the funds.

There are aftermarket options for struts but they’re quality doesn’t seem like it’s up to OEM spec. The coil overs would be the simplest way to go, and you avoid any issues down the road. That might be the way I go for mine when that day comes. But the S8 community has no issues with just replacing one strut at a time either, so not sure why the Phaeton would be any different. I think it’s likely they get replaced because they don’t know exactly which one is bad so they just do them all. The tricky part is to find what pet is actually bad, it may not be a strut, could be the pump or the valving and reservoir that just let all the air leak out. There are also rebuild kits out there, or at least rebuild write ups if it’s just an air spring. Sometimes it’s just an o ring failure that causes the issue. I’d hate to see this beast be put out to pasture due to the air springs.

Yeah, the S8/A8 guys do a single strut all the time.

That’s an even scarier position then . He should definitely have some serious reserve funds in the bank - unless he had to blow it all on the down payment.
C oworker just b ought a house and had both AC units let go about a month later. I imagine the cost was substantial.

If $1600 for new struts is an issue then you shouldn’t own a Phaeton.
If $1600 for new struts is an issue and you don’t have the fab/mechanic abilities to make coilovers from a similar car work then you REALLY shouldn’t own a Phaeton.

I think the real trouble is finding someone to do the work. IIRC VW had to certify dealers to work on certain Phaeton subsystems. A decade and a half later there's probably not a ton of certified techs left.

then he must become the certified tech.

I would agree, is it best and recommended to do them all at once, and does it make sense? Likely yes, but that doesn’t mean that they HAVE to be done at the same time, especially considering the circumstances. I do think others are right in saying that the owner should have budgeted for this/researched a workaround (COILOVERS) if it is in fact a part that imminently fails.

I’m glad someone could give more insight, as I was wondering if these were rebuildable. Sounds like it would be worth trying to diagnose at several hundred dollars a strut.

Definitely worth some time to diagnose where the leak is. There should be a fair amount of info out there now regarding these cars, also check the Audi sites too. I know I’ve seen numerous posts for the A8 and S8 cars. Should be very similar. And if you want to shop OEM parts, check our Jim Ellis Audi or VW, they offer good prices for the OEM parts. ECS tuning and fcp euro Should have parts as well. And don’t.m be afraid of salvage parts either if they have less time or mileage on them.
