This is both a really touching story and an interesting look at the way our birth language impacts the way we hear and think.

My first word was in Portuguese (I had a nanny who spoke it), but I doubt learning/speaking it would unleash a torrent of memory.

I grew up speaking English, and now do a superb Frenglish on a day-to-day basis!
That’s not to say I haven’t mastered French (I think I do pretty good) but I’ll admit that I don’t try very hard because I assume everyone will understand my English expressions. I probably sound like a moron, but I muddle through!

As I read through the article, I was thinking about how my wife and her family deal with language. They speak what I like to call “TexMex,” a combination of English and Spanish which rolls off their tongues in the rapid fire cadence usually associated with native Spanish speakers. While they can easily change languages, often mid-sentence, they have a hard time focusing on one language or the other. I think they lose a word in one language and the correct word just pops up in the other, so they switch. It was surprising to see this mentioned in the article. I’m glad to see that this is a common characteristic of multilingual persons and not just my crazy in-laws!
