Why do manufacturer's do a poor job with hitch finishes?

Was underneath my 2017 Transit and saw that the powder count on the factory receiver was bubbling with visible rust spots. I scraped off the loose bits and hit it POR-15. The powder coat quality is similar to that on my little Harbor Freight trailer.

A friend’s Acura MDX receiver is completely rusting away.

Why so bad?

guessing because they’re made from metal thick enough where it’d take 50 years before corrosion would structurally compromise them? Rust is a big issue with car bodies because they’re made from thin sheet metal. Rust is merely a cosmetic issue for heavyweight stuff like receiver hitches.

but it’s all down to the simple fact that if you have something made from iron/steel, it will rust.

I agree with everything you said. It’s cosmetic surface rust. For now. My Forester’s hitch didn’t last 15 years. The expanding rust narrowed the receiver so no hitch will fit.

You’d think their powdercoat would last more than two years.

I wouldn’t know.  And perfectly happy not knowing.

Probably right. Just thought if t hey can keep the body from rusting, they could do it with the receiver.

towbars probably come from an outside supplier

Powder coats of this quality usually need to be blasted and recoated to a higher industrial standard. I plan to do this with my own trailer receiver when I order one off RockAuto. Gonna have them blast it, then coat it with some seriously strong stuff.

Good point.  The one I just installed on my Sienna is going to rust in a few years too then.

Evidently the quality level is simply low for the receivers. Outside supplier. Price point. I probably wouldn’t have been happy paying twice what I did for the Sienna receiver I just installed.

Blasting and recoating a brand new receiver sounds extreme though.
