If you haven’t seen Eddie’s appearance on the newest season of Comedians in Cars, it’s worth a watch. He and Seinfeld both started about the same time, in a lot of the same places.

Raw and Delirious were our VHS standby’s for every time we had a sleepover at a friend’s house whose parents were especially permissive. Or ignorant.

Eddie goes on about this with Seinfeld in a recent installment of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, too (which, alas, does not appear to be available online, but you can find it on Netflix). He’s still pissed about it.

Or as Chris Rock calls it the real Eddie Murphy

You’re right, that outfit is hilarious!

When I was younger, I thought Murphy’s stand up was the best. I still think he’s funny, but my ears have been worn down by gratuitous profanity. I feel like if you over use it, it loses its comedic shock value. More judicious application works better for me.

Among my all time favorites...

{ Murphy impersonating Pryor ridiculing Cosby for chewing out Murphy for swearing too much.}

Do you get paid ?

When you say what you say, do the people laugh?

Then tell [Cosby] to have a coke and a smile, and shut the [f ] up!

If he calls back, tell him to suck MY [d]!!!

———————-

The Cookout bit where Eddie impersonates his own father is on my high rotation playlist.

“It’s MY HOUSE!!!

I know you’re seven. I know you’re seven... you’ll be a seven- year- old, walkin-the-dog, no-house [m-f’r]!!!”

I was just talking last night about the lack of good comedy shows on various platforms. The talent contest comedians are good, but the hour-long specials generally suck, and get way too angrily observational, and political, not actually funny.

I miss good long-form standup, like Murphy, Leary, Seinfeld, and even ones that aren’t as big of headliners like Brian Regan [ Boxen!!!] , Christopher Titus, and less-political bits from Lewis Black. I usually like Gaffigan, but his latest was kind of rambling.

Most of the hour long ones that are coming out are unwatchable. Chappelle’s latest was not bad, but more accusatory and vindictive than light-hearted... I am tempted to watch the one by Bill Burr that just came out the other day...

I like the comic that just made it into the finals on AGT... Neimiller… he is really good, and Ali Saddiq on Bring The Funny, and some of those are pretty good, too.

I normally agree... but Eddie Murphy didn’t use profanity as a crutch, he used it as material... and although, yes it was a lot of profanity, but the premises and the punchlines were fantastic, ironic, and delivered better than just about anyone else .

So many other comedians use the profanity as shock value in leu of good premises, or any punchlines at all, and on that, I do agree with you.

I do very much appreciate clean comics, though, from Foxworthy to Leno, Seinfeld, and several others.

Murphy’s material was good in its own right, with or without the profanity. These days, I look at a joke and think, what if it didn’t have the swear words in it? Would it be just as funny? If the answer is yes, then why not save the four letter words for when they pack the most punch. If it needs the word to make the full impact (and it’s a good joke otherwise), then it was a good call.

My current favs are Gaffigan and Iglesias, both of whom are coming to a casino near me this Fall.

Jeff Breuer is some quality comedy, and surprisingly clean.

Jim Breuer is another good one. like his heavy metal influence.

Not familiar with Jeff, if that is a different person.

I liked Iglesias’ first special, I should watch more of his later stuff.

I like Gaffigan a lot, but his latest one on Amazon went on and on about how he could go on and on with horse jokes or something. It faded into the background, and didn’t hold my attention. But Bippity-Boppity-BACON!! and a lot of his stuff is really good.

I love that bit for a few reasons. 1) Young Eddie Murphy was funny as hell, and 2) it  reaffirms my suspicions about people who care about how other talk: they’re rapists.

You can how funny Jim Breuer is because people who think he’s funny can’t even remember his name.
