(Ok, so it turns out they suck for security, but they’re still good enough for what I need. Don’t secure your priceless artifacts with these.)
My shopping sprees this week to recover from my multiple Jeep thefts reminded me I needed to take a moment to promote my newest analog technology crush: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
I use the gym a lot more than I used to, and because my eyesight has never been all that great, I’ve struggled mightily with combination locks.
The Masterlock changed all that.
Not only is it trivial to use blindfolded, you use it one-handed, you can set your own combination, and it’s fast . 2-3 seconds and I’m done. It also stands out from the bland combination locks everyone else uses. It’s the perfect gym lock. I’ve now bought 4 (lost one, had one stolen this week, then decided I needed to keep spares of everything I rely on).
(This probably sounds like a paid promotion, but it’s not; however, if Masterlock wants to pay for a YouTube series from the world’s least knowledgeable Jeep mechanic, including a garage, lift, a junk Jeep to work on and someone to do the actual work, they’re welcome to drop me a note.)

Huh. Seems way faster than a numerical lock. I might try those out.
Also what happened with the jeep?!

Who steals a lock?

Oh that’s cool! Is there a limit on how many steps you can put to unlock? Can you go in-between (think northeast)? Sidenote: I misplaced my keys for a firesafe box with my passport in it and think I need to take up picking locks as a hobby. I already somewhat understand the internal workings of normal key locks, I wonder how this directional works internally.

Two different break-ins in four days. The Jeep itself was open, as it always is during the summer, but two different people broke into my console and glove compartment.
Mostly minor stuff, but the $400 prescription sunglasses hurt.

The same person who stole the gym bag containing the lock.

Just the four directions, but as far as I know, u nlimited steps.
I just have 5, which if I could ever remember combinatorial math I could probably tell you how many different combinations that could be. 4 to the 5th? 1024 is plenty for the gym.

The part of me that has a passing interest in locksport would probably go to something like this if I had to have a combination lock. It would probably not be able to be shimmed open with a business card like an “anti-shim” master lock. Neat idea on the mechanism, though.

Ugh. Thieves are the worst. And yeah I bet the glasses hurt.... Are you talking with insurance?
Maybe some kind of security system? There are some pretty high-tech options out there nowadays, to the point where they could help even with no doors/roof.

I don’t actually use a padlock for anything but I’ll keep this in mind if the need arises.
Mat h… been a while since I’ve done anything other than basic. Would it be 5! (5x4x3x2x1)? 120 combos at 5 steps?

These are awesome in low- light places like camping or festivals.

I’m probably going to be shelling out for Tuffy storage products. Pricy but seemingly bulletproof.
I haven’t spoken with insurance since it would be under my deductible anyway. It’s frustrating since this is the 2nd time this year someone has stolen my prescription sunglasses, after 5 years of absolutely no problems.

I think factorial only applies when there’s some dependency (you can only use a direction once, e.g.)

After years of wanting them, I finally got prescription lenses put into some old frames I liked a few weeks ago. I feel for you.
Gotta look on the bright side. Good opportunity to build your jeep in a slightly different direction for a little while

I’ve been looking forward to spending money on upgrades instead of fixes, but this wasn’t the type of upgrade I wanted.

Wouldn’t it be 5x5x5x5x5 as you can pick the same direction 5 times in a row?
(my probability skills are rusty)

Just on the basis that 120 combos seems way too small, yes. I took 0 math classes in college so I’m trying to think back a good decade or more ago.

Imma go ahead and believe this. My remembrance of math formulas is garbage.

It’s not factorial... I think exponential is the term.
4 directions, and 5 steps
4^5 = 1024
When you start with one of the 4 directions, it leads to another four possible choices, each of which lead to another four possible choices and so on until you’ve made the five steps.

I doubt Master Lock likes YouTube very much; I’ve learned that many Master Locks provide slightly more security than a couple sturdy zip ties . Hopefully this directional lock doesn’t have any major security flaws.

here’s your lock being picked by a child.
They have no shim protection.

Haha I was going to say it’s a pretty bad commercial.for the lock if the lock gets stolen but I guess that makes sense

Unfortunate, but I’m still fine with it for my use case.

Apparently no shim protection, but for my use case I’m satisfied. Half the lockers I use wouldn’t allow much of an attack angle, and it’d be a little obvious to anyone nearby.
Not ideal, though. Definitely a shame.

That’s fine if you only want it as a visual deterrent.
but it’s an awful lock and should never be recommended to anyone until they fix the shimming flaw.

Undeniably disappointing. Apparently “Masterlock” is quite the misnomer.
