Kinja'd!!!

I made it a goal to apply to five places that I’m completely unqualified for by the end of the day (yesterday) and after finishing up four applications... I was exhausted and penned the above “cover letter” to blow off steam and relax a bit. I included a real resumé at the end for what it’s worth.

.And in an entirely eyebrow-raising turn of events .. The HR person responded at 5am saying she loved it, was sending it up the chain, and that she wanted to talk. That talk went well, the next did as well, and now I get to see the final boss.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

This has been the weirdest week of my working life.

That did strike me as very strange. It's a Biochem lab, for what it's worth.

You think they’d be against dogs for lab cleanliness reasons.

I absolutely love that letter. See, what many employers are looking for is someone who is a creative thinker and self-starter/learner. Your CV provided the latter with your history as a small  business owner.  The cover letter demonstrated the former. If you come in and show that you have aptitude for lab work and trainability and the proper background, you are what a lot of folks are looking for.

I hope so. I was completely honest in what I wrote, but I’m honestly unsure how I’ll manage the puppy thing.

Say “ yes” today and figure out how tomorrow, right?

It’s called differentiation ... everybody else sent stupid videos and vision statements. You brought it honey-badger style.

That’s fantastic. You’ve made it past HR screening or, where resumes go to die. And interviews too!

So many cover letters are deadly dull. That one really got thier attention. I wonder if it says anything about workplace culture there ?

First, a company where the resume and cover letter are read by an actual human and not an algorithm looking for keywords and degree types?! Don’t let this employer get away!

Echoing what others said, I’m not surprised you got a response. A c lever and   funny cover letter says way more about the candidate than typical resume.

Hell, you wanna move to WI and learn CAD?! The winters are lovely.

If your resume shows an inkling of qualification; this just shows some amount of creativity and sense of humor. What do they have to lose. Having reviewed resumes; it’s rare to see something that stands out so when you do, you really appreciate it.

Careful, a lot of companies want people who are just like the ones they already have. Everybody might be bringing in puppies and juggling all day.

Learning CAD is something I very much want to do . Late nights with Sketchup trying to build models of buildings I’d seen walking around town really affirmed my love for design software. WI sounds pretty good too, as I’m tired of 50 Shades of Grey (hello from Seattle).

Nicely done! I’m not part of the hi ring process where I work (which is handled by my fellow engineers, but they realize I’d ask the candidate what they drove and go from there) but I would be impressed with that letter and a decent following resume. Good luck!

CAD is supremely easy to learn if you've got a solid grasp of geometry. Go for it.

The interface designers for NX would like a word...

(Solid grasp of geometry - and visualization - does help a lot. E ven the best software can’t tell you what you want.)

That’s an amazing letter. I didn’t come anywhere near that in my last job search (only?) but I did completely change careers into one where I had actually no formal training whatsoever. It doesn’t mean I wasn’t qualified, and if anything being self-taught showed I had an aptitude for continued learning... but still. The search had failed twice before because all the candidates were boring, stereotypical programmer types who just knew the keyboard and screen. They wanted someone who could also, you know, interact with humans.

tl/dr - you gotta stand out somehow, so long as you don’t offend them and  you’re qualified too, then BAM you’re in.
