that voice in your head is right some times

Kinja'd!!!

Yesterday I changed the oil on my car and my wife’s. As I was falling asleep last night I had a nagging feeling that I forgot to put her oil cap back on. I just didn’t have a clear memory of putting it back on. So I jumped out of bed, went out in the rain and found the oil cap sitting on the windshield cowl by the wipers...

Also I need to make a physical check list when I do this stuff. It’s like 10 steps and I forgot One of the most important.

I did that years ago. Parked somewhere next day  and noticed there was oil dripping down the grille. THIS CAN’T BE GOOD I said. Turned out I had left the cap off and there was oil all over the engine bay.

That would be worse. My brother in law did that but it was the fill plug on his transmission.

It seems like no real harm was done but it was scary.

You have a good brain, that’s how it is supposed to work. I left the cap off my wife’s old Altima  once before running it around the block after changing the oil, “why does it sound different and what is that oil smell? Oh crap....”  I’d left the cap on the plastic engine cover and luckily it was still there...

On most cars you can leave it on the valve cover right next to the fill hole. But on the Fit the valve cover is completely under the cowl.

I’ve forgotten to put the oil cap back on before. It’s like an “out of sight out of mind” thing. I like my car better. The cap can just sit on the valve cover... cover nice and handy.

When I was teaching automotive still we had a few in stances of tools being left under the hood or items left off (i .e.: caps, clamps, etc.). We started a "How good can we get" policy where someone from a different group would double check and if they found something they would be rewarded, while you got doses of public humiliation or getting a day of being the shop "service writer."

But did you put the oil in? That would be the most crucial mistake.

Yea, I’ve woken up with a few of those “Oh shit” moments over the years. Glad you remembered!

Similar situation, but with the oil filter

We forgot to check the surface where the filter gasket meets the block; the old filter gasket was practically melted onto it. So installing the new filter seemed fine until we noticed a puddle of oil underneath because two rubber gaskets meeting each other don’ t provide the best seal
