About 5 minutes after I shot this video, it started raining twice as hard — four 4 hours. In our neighborhood and a little further east, it rained 2 inches in two hours. My yard was completely flooded and couldn’t hold any water, so the water just starting rushing towards the house.

We had about 7" of standing water against the back door. The rain is so loud we can’t even hear each other yell standing five feet apart...

So, we get to work. Gravel, shovels, buckets, trenches, makeshift dams, sandbags, and lots of “woe is I.” I was outside until about 9pm.

Damage: stream of water from under the basement stairs that conveniently rain directly into the drain. Small puddle on north side where the garden couldn’t handle the water. Medium puddle on west side where the front garden was obliterated. Puddle in attic from when the wind started blowing hard.

It could be worse.

Testimonials on Next Door and Facebook have some of our neighbors with as much as TWO FEET of standing water in the basement. Several people had less water but main lines become clogged, filling their basement with brown water. One guy said he had just put up new drywall last week in attempt finally finish his basement. Brutal. Ours is unfinished, thank goodness.

So as bad as it was, I think we made out okay. Saw  my neighbor digging a trench around his entire house this morning, so I bet he had problems, too.

That was my evening. I have a great wife. And I suppose compared to other people, the house did... okay.

Oof, that sucks. We’ve had a couple doozy storms this week. Not crazy rain but lots of lightning; A house was struck and burned, and a few fire s started around but they were under control right away.

One of the best things about Tennessee is the amount of water it takes to put us in trouble. 13.5" of rain in 36 hours was the worst flood in history for us but we can receive 5" and it drains off and disappears in a matter of hours.

Oooffff. Yeah, sometimes all you can do is grin and bear it. You definitely came out OK, all things considered.

Several years ago our town got 9" of rain in 24 hours. Lots of damage and flooded basements throughout the town. Our floor drains backed up just enough that the floor was wet, but that’s about it. It’s unfinished, and nothing of value is ever le ft on the floor.

My sump pump is working overtime and it’s slowly creeping into my garage. Luckily the rain seems to have stopped and we’ll get a break today.

That was one crazy storm for around here. Not as bad as the one ~5 years ago that I remember because it had bands of rain that were like getting hit with a fire hose (the noise in my car was deafening and it was so hard that wipers were useless, you couldn’t see outside each time one hit).

Glad to hear that it wasn’t as bad as it could have been for you. Is there just insufficient infrastructure in place to get the water away from your house? You’d think that after over 100 years someone that owned the house would have put in something to keep it from flooding the house.

I’m glad that my drains all work, water goes downhill, and it leaves my property... I’m sure I won’t be as glad when something like this happens when it’s oversaturated and the idiocy of my neighbors results in a landslide.

Also, you should try to Rain-X all your windows. The windshield is , while those side windows are not beading at all.

Ouch, I feel your pain from being out in the hurricane the other day. We were lucky as managed to divert it from coming in, but damn man....I’m glad it all mostly worked out for you...

We got 2.5" in Montana over 24 hrs but no flooding or land slide issues. Years ago in sacramento we got a 5" storm and that messed some shit up. I’m glad you escaped the worst of it.

Between this and the thunderstorm on Saturday, this is looking to be quite the September.

Our kitties spent a lot of time hiding from the thunder. We definitely didn’t get hit as hard as you though. On the plus side, our one week old roof works great!

Yikes. That storm was nasty - I’ve emptied my basement dehumidifier four times in two days this weekend.

On the news tonight they are calling it a succession of microbursts that caused flooding up there.

Sorry to hear that. I’m familiar with the fallout from too much water. It sounds like you came out pretty well, considering. I’ve been installing french drains all around our house just to deal with heavy rainfalls like that. We have a large drainage swale in the back yard which carries rainfall from four houses up the street through our yard to the neighborhood retention pond. Our challenge is just getting the water away from the house to the swale.

Kinja'd!!!

Our neighbors have it much worse than we do.
