Last week, after getting back from a video job in The Amazon jungle I decided to go ahead and take my vacation for the year meaning most of my office co-workers didn’t see me for an entire month. I’ve made it a point to load up my Jeep and take it at least one out of state adventure each year, and this year I decided to make the pilgrimage to Telluride/Ouray, Colorado.
The drive from Dallas to Telluride isn’t the quickest so it was necessary to make a stop halfway in New Mexico, the plus side was getting to see the house that belonged to Walter White in Breaking Bad.
I made camp for the night and eagerly anticipating finally getting to Colorado the next day.
at the crack of dawn I was back ion the road and hightailed it to Telluride. I figured that if I started Imogene Pass that same day I would end up still being on the trail past sundown so I decided to make camp once again and begin the trail in the morning. I did however get some great shots of the Milkey Way!
Soon as I was able to get a good breakfast in me, I was off onto Imogene Pass
Getting to see all the abandoned mines was really something. You could spend a whole day at them finding different artifacts from the past. As the air continually got thinner and my breathing getting heavier each time I got out to get pictures, I finally made the summit.
After that it was time for the descent.
Imogene Pass is pretty easy and was a great trail to get my footing and dust off my off road prowess. The thing I loved about it the most was that you get pretty much every topography you can imagine. It’s like... one of the rings from Halo!
Next up was Black Bear Pass. The butt clincher. I was actually pretty nervous about doing it initially. After all, some guy in a 4Runner rolled over on it the previous day causing the trail to close down.
But I figured I would regret coming all the way out here to not do it. So it began.
As many of you know, BBP is pretty low key but does get harder as you approach the steps. I was at a 16 degree angle at one moment before arriving at the steps, and in a 4door Wrangler, its an.. interesting feeling.
On the steps I was obviously too preoccupied clenching my butt cheeks than to try and get pictures of going down it, and honestly I barely remember going down them as I got borderline tunnel vision while on it. But I made it down with no issue whatsoever.
Overrall I’d definitely do Black Bear Pass again. It’s true what everyone says, as long as you take your time and don’t do anything stupid you’ll be fine.

Sounds like a very cool trip. Metal roofs are fairly uncommon in Albuquerque. I’m guessing the folks that own that house now did it to make it easier to wash off the pizza that was getting thrown up there on a regular basis.

I’ve done those on foot, I don’t think I could handle it in a vehicle. It’s nerve -wracking enough to stand on the road and look over on Black Bear. Nice photos though!

I was on the local forums they day of the rollover for that 4Runner. I haven’t been, but that pass is definitely a cheek clenched for sure. I’m pretty sure there was a rollover the day the pass opened, and this one wasn’t too much after, either. They posted up pictures of how they did the recovery, it was pretty interesting to see.
Looks like a great time. I haven’t been down in that part of the state yet, but I sure want to go. I’d probably be able to drag my family to go up to Animas Forks to check out the ghost town, but there’s zero chance I’d get them to tag along for Black Bear.

Great shots and a Jeep owner putting his stock vehicle through the ringer? Double win!

That and the 6-foot fence in the front yard and what looks like an 8-foot fence on their front porch. They probably won’t be able to sell that house for a looong time. It sucks when people have to get so obsessive over something they feel it’s okay to ruin someones life.

Did they determine what mistake he made?

So, Imogene Pass no problem in a stock Tacoma 4x4 Off Road?

Yep. Nervous driver went too high to the right. As the right side climbed higher, the left side dropped off a stair and it did a slow rollover. It’s also common there for people to get nervous about the front end dropping and people jamming the brakes, which causes them to roll, too.
After getting it flipped back upright and bleeding the brakes, the recovery team was able to drive it down.

I’d say as long as you have a good set of off road tires on it, there should be no issue!

Costly mistake. Does insurance take care of you for this sort of stuff?

Not without a pleasant rise in your rates! There was another rollover recently on Argentine Pass here where the parking prowl in the transmission failed. The Taco took an unfortunate driverless ride down the hill.

Oof... that sucks.
Not sure if I ever want to take on Big Bear, but I really want to do Imogene sometime.
