It’s time for TAE’s pointless hot take!

The Defender is probably a true competitor to the Jeep Wrangler JL and the upcoming Ford Bronco. Prices aren’t very comparable, no, but on the lifestyle(tm) department, I think this gives the more expensive versions of the Wrangler a true run for their money, specially considering this one is probably more comfortable, easier on gas, and easier to live with for 95% of Wrangler owners.

I think that based on the pricing scheme and the design , Land Rover might be loosing out on the G-class market, but who knows, maybe they’ll do the SVR thing and put a V8 in there for good measure.

Also, the front end design is....not of my liking, but the interior is great. Lets see what Ford brings to the table!

I’m much less curious about how it competes, I’m more interest in how (or IF) it can shake the “upper-class status symbol” stigma of the brand. Most of LR’s previous efforts to move down the market in price have been disasters. The Evoque sort of works because it’s totally different from the rest of the line.

So the question will be “Will people see this as a legit alternative to Wrangler, or just a Discovery* Junior?”

(* or whatever random alphanumeric system the Discovery is currently carrying for this model cycle. No point in trying to keep up )

i think it’s ugly and rife with all the modem land Rover foibles. it’s a solid “not a Toyota or Jeep” choice though and it stomps both of them on payload and power

But the thing is... the Evoque is a range rover this is supposed to be a land rover , you know, the kind that police in England have, and that you could get cloth seats with in the past. In North America I think we do only see them as high-end vehicles... but I think that in this particular case, it is a benefit for the Defender.... I think that some Jeep people can enjoy the ruggedness while also having better interiors for most of their life, and less noise, and all of the other benefits of an enclosed unibody.

Self-titled adventurer monied men of a certain age around Seattle are going to line up for this thing, to complement their 90s era Defenders.

That being said, I don’t hate it.

I thought Range Rover was reserved strictly for the top-end, luxurious Land Rover model ...I need to get caught up. Or they need to get their sh*t together.

Probably both.

I think I’d rather see these than Wrangler JL’s with pointless mods doing the daily commute

You seem like someone that has his shit together.... JLR on the other hand doesn’t... so I’d point blame at them

If you keep options light it is actually an interesting competitor to a high end JL. But personally it being a new chassis with with 85 ECUs is frightening. A loaded J eep with that resale and   the old 3 .6 V6 will probably be the better buy.

I think that in modern times I might trust JLR a bit more than Jeep.

As optioned I think that this is a solid Rubicon alternative. Roof rack and snorkel are going to be available as aftermarket and will probably be cheaper.

The average person’s eyes will glaze over if you start talking the difference between Rover, Land Rover, Range Rover, etc.

It’s the “ British luxury suv brand”

I’ve avoided all the news. I think I’ll have to browse the configurator and find a good test drive to read. I’d rather see these than another angry eyed JL Unlimited.

Man ouch. I priced one out and tried to be a conservative as possible. It was $ 64 k all said and done.

To give you an idea of what else you can get for that is a 2019 Ram 2500 crew cab 4x4 with a Cummins for about the same (mid tier level L aramie $ 63k). Or the current Overlander king, a Lexus GX 4x4 L uxury is $ 64k.

I get the nameplate and idk if Brexit is hurting the price but it just seems like too much. Enthusiasts will flock to them no doubt but they aren’t going to be as plentiful as the mall krawlers.

O ffroad capabilities, 1 00% throw it in the mix.  But I'd trust the GX over the rest.
