Also known as... DOTS.
My heart said leave a note asking if it’s for sale, my brain just about had an aneurysm at the very thought.
Turbo manual Volvos will forever be my fetish.

This reminds me, there are currently two Volvo 850 AWDs for sale near me.

That’s a full 1% of north american 850 AWDs ever sold

I do love me the V70R, but you reminded me to check and see if my other Swede is still available on CL. Yup, the Viggen is still there.

There was a white turbo manual awd 850 for sale in BC about a year ago that I still kick myself over not getting. Some kind of Volvo test mule, of which there were only like 10 made...
I want that first one. Bad.

I don’t know, I’m thinking you something less conspicuous and more reliable, like FutureHeapOwner’s V50 T5 MT AWD. Very nice driving car.

Swedespeed forums have classifieds, as well as a running “unaffiliated” thread capturing listings elsewhere. Lots and lots of R cars turn up there.

I’ve both bought and sold Volvos off the swede speed classifieds. That place is dangerous...
I do love how they do their monthly unaffiliated listing there

Don’t torture yourself with with the FWD Volvo problems. Get yourself a RWD Turbo Manual Volvo. You’re only fooling yourself if you think the newer ones are more reliable.

My brother lived in Paris for four years teaching French to English students or something like that.

I think a V70R would be the perfect donor car for my dream build: A V8 5 speed RWD wagon.
Coincidentally, most of the problems with the turbo Rs are engine and driveline related...

We’d be good friends.
I’ve always dreamed of a V70R with an STI running gear/engine swap. All the style, comfort and luxury of the Volvo, with the superior awd and reliability of the Subaru.
I could get behind a V8 version too.

Well... Of my two manual turbo fwd Volvos... Both of them exploded within a week. Don’t worry, I don’t think any of ‘em are reliable. But they’re still soooo good.
I like the boxy rwd wagons, but they’re a nemic. Swap an engine in there and we’re talking!

I want to like them, FWD aside (5 cylinder is super cool) but your experience seems to be par for the course, also parts seem to be a little more in my experience .
You found the Turbo RWD Volvo anemic? Was it modified at all? I’ve never driven one so I’m curious to hear your experience. I know they weren’t rated for much from the factory

The turbo rwd I drove was stock. To be fair, I was coming from a 95 850 T5 that was nodded to make 300hp at the wheels, and a V70 T5 that was stock, but still had a good amount of oomph. I love them both, but it wasn’t the right time to own something that required so much upkeep.
I've been a pretty big advocate for rwd, but those two Volvos... Oh man. They gave me a new appreciation for fwd. Add enough power and with a manual transmission, just about anything could be fun. I remember having two sport bike riders pull up next to me at a stop light amazed at how quickly the 850 wagon accelerated!

LS (or Whatever V8 Was Laying Around) all the things, but the STI running gear is such a good idea because you get the Subaru AWD and suspension that will put up with some off road shenanigans. I don’t really think of Boxer when I think of realiable though, but who cares with that sound

Ha, reliable compared to the Volvo mill. And I have to wonder how much of the reliability claims are due to the types of owners who buy STI's...

After owning an LGT, I wouldn’t choose the turbo boxer for myself, but I can absolutely respect the idea. (It is a tiny engine, I bet it could be used to make RWD versions of many FWD vehicles).
Actually making one is high on my list of future project vehicles, but my current project is still probably a couple years from moving under it’s own power.

I completely agree about FWD, 90’s Honda showed me the light on that. And that makes a lot of sense, I understand owning something ‘old’ is daunting

I mean the 850 AWD in general was a test mule of sorts, so like a test mule of the test mule then. Crazy.
I also want the first one, but they are pretty famously unreliable....

Pitter patter. The good ones have only been increasing in value. My guess is there are far less than a 1000 V70R still in circulation. Remove the rusty northeastern cars and the modified ones and the pool shrinks by the day.

Hmm. I still see them fairly commonly... I’d guess higher than that, but then again I am in a Volvo market and I don’t know total production numbers.
Regardless, I need one. Trade ya for a super practical Miata

Haha, I’d love Miata but it’s not currently in the cards. You’re r ight about your current location. The PNW and New England seem to have the majority. Only 3500 VRs for the US over four years. Quite a few more SRs but those aren’t half as cool in my opinion.
