Been a while since I updated on the old 1992 Caravan, but this weekend was paint weekend finally. The end result was worth the wait.
Finished up the “finish” sanding I’ve been putting off for about a month ( Grandpa borrowing it while his truck was in the shop, doing a lot of family stuff, life, etc ), so we pulled her in Saturday morning and got to work.
Got her all masked off, then laid on the sealer to level things out. Once the sealer tacked up, I was on to color.
Once the paint had tacked up some, I pulled it into the sun to bake for a bit.
Once the paint had dried enough to touch, I set into putting it back together.
Spotted, the elusive Grandpa!
With her all back together she ventured home, at which I cleaned up some things.
Side note, that is my neighbor’s new Atlas in the background. Holy hell does that thing look cheap inside!
Very happy with how it turned out. Now I just gotta let it cure for a bit, then I can put the emblems back on and get the wheel matched pin stripes on to complete the look.

This one will be getting pinstripes that match the wheels.
Otherwise, no. I feel going overboard with stripes would just clutter up the clean lines.

So 2 questions, is that an oem color? Cause it looks super close to one my grandma had (though I think hers also has the wood grain). Even so looks super clean.
And how hard is it to deal with copart? I have been looking into them but always been hesitant.

Very period-appropriate with the gold wheels and upcoming trim. I remember my dad’s T&C had kind of gold washed wheels.

I couldn’t get the OEM color locally, so this is as close as I could get without spending big bucks. It’s slightly more blue and about a shade darker than factory.
I have no idea on copart, never dealt with them.

I’ll pass on that.
I had thought about doing black woodgrain vinyl on the rally van though, I still do occasionally, but the price of that vinyl always changes my mind.

100,000 internet points if grandpa breaks out the illegal lawn darts.
Also, grandpa is built like linebacker — no wonder Da Bears* had no chance last Thursday night!

The Chrysler techs are morons, which led to an oil consumption scare, turned out they just overfilled the oil when it got it’s last oil change. Drained it to where it should be, now it’s fine.
Apparently the body shop they have doing their work is a bunch of morons as well. Went to pick it up after the warranty fix of the hood only to find dirt in the new paint job on the hood. Now it goes back AGAIN to get the hood fixed properly. I told him not to call me until it was done right.
The van itself is a great cruiser, we enjoy driving it a lot. It’s smooth, quiet, comfortable, composed enough to throw through corners, and has loads of power once you’re moving. The trans has adapted to my driving, so the clunky shifts have disappeared, now it hits the right gear, right now, every time.
My only complaint with the van itself is the Penta’s lack of low end torque, which causes it to get terrible economy in town, otherwise it does excellent on the highway. W e’ve pulled 29.8 mpg cruising at 75-80 mph and 32.3 mpg cruising at 60 mph, in town it struggles to get 22 mpg, so all in all, it gets the same economy as this little 1992 here ( averages 24 mpg mixed, 27.5 hwy )......

The 3 wheeler is my young cousin’s, he bought it for $100. Yes I did rip it around the property before parking it there, yes I did rip it around again before pulling it back in the garage, yes it is a riot.
No lawn darts unfortunately, did break out the .22 Pellet Gun though........
That angle makes him look much larger than he is. He’s 5'4", skinny as a rail other than having the typical old guy gut.

Nice paint job. Almost makes me wish I painted my rims a copper color. May I ask how long it took to repaint the van? My Focus is in need of a major touch-up, and I’m thinking of doing it myself. How much paint did you use? I can scale it down a bit for my car, but I’d bet total surface area would be close. The roof must have been fun to do.

Something in the driveway needs to go according to the Mrs. The new van and the car have to stay according to her, so it’s either this one or mine on the chopping block, problem is they both make me very happy, but both for different reasons, so it’s a VERY tough call.

I told you to do bronze/gold on your wheels........
To your questions:
1. Actual painting only took about 2 hrs.
2. Body work/sanding before painting, plus cleaning and masking, took a very long time.
3. It took me a gallon of single stage, although I usually get by with 1/2 gallon of paint when doing base coat/clear coat.
The roof wasn’t bad, I have a bench I keep specifically for doing the roof, so I can pretty much do it in halves.

I think part of it is that Subaru has so indoctrinated me to seeing gold and rally blue, so any other shade looks “off”.
Now that’s marketing.
So the rally van is still kicking, this one's getting finished up, and you've got the new van for daily duties... Any big projects in the works? I know you were talking about an engine swap. Was that for this one?

I’m going to paint my Safari, section by section. Sandblast, rattle can primer, then rattle can top coat. It can hardly look worse than it does already, old 90s GM paint falling off and revealing the underlying primer. I don’t have the space or the patience to attempt what you’re doing. Looks very good, by the way...

Actually the 2 old vans have been running daily duty the last 2 weeks. The new one has been getting hood rust warrantied last week, now this week it’s back in to get the hood fixed right.
This one is staying “stock”, I like it exactly how it is. Mine is the one I’m leaning on swapping, again, I haven’t been happy with it since I put the 3.3 in it. Hoping to find a 98-00 3.8L to put in it.
Really right now I’m torn. One of them needs to be sold, but I can’t decide which one. It’s a tough call because I love them both, but for different reasons.
