History is watching this closely.
The Army build up on the border is very troubling. I can't see this ending well.

It sucks even suckier when Americans think flying the flag of another nation constitutes patriotism.
We are certainly living in interesting times.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go fly the ol’ red white and blue. I’m feeling extra patriotic today.
Also, Hongkongers aren’t always Chinese.

You may think it’s splitting hairs, but there is a huge difference between socialism and a socialist state.
Ironically, if our government was actually “by, for, and of the people”, it would best be described as socialism.
I don’t understand why people think that free and public services like education, medicine, fire and rescue, police, and affordable public housing are so terrible. A society that supports and cares for its citizens sounds better than one that (at best) leaves them to fend for themselves.

It's nothing to do with patriotism and everything to do with sending a message of defiance to the central government in a manner designed to most thoroughly get under their skin..

This has to be some kind of not so low key trolling, right? Or simply a joke?
In my anecdotal experience, those who preach patriotism and moan about socialism couldn’t offer a working definition of either if their lives depended on it.
Patriotism - embracing authoritarian strongmen and using zero-strategy trade wars to distract, yep. Waiting for the sinister zero-accountability PRC kleptocracy to pull a Tiananmen Square in HK and see how our definitely not corrupt and definitely a stable genius real manly man 6'4" 230 of muscle and strength patriotic leader and his base applaud it. Just as his trade war addresses none of the real issues with that monster, while money from there still continues to flow into west coast real estate. Patriotism, lolololol. Socialism, just don’t touch my medicare and social security! Real capitalists embrace medical debt and trickle down lies.

It’s a kleptocracy.
I’ll wager 6 figures that anyone calling it socialist couldn’t put forth a formal argument for their claim. That includes the author of this thread.

I don’t equate China with Hong Kong, but even here in Canada there appears to be support from Chinese diaspora in their “fight” against Hong Kong. Fuck that.
T he Chinese government can go fuck itself - nothing against the Chinese people, I just hate what they do and how they do it.
In regards to socialism, my argument will always come down to costs. The my current provincial/federal taxes plus the costs of paying into employment insurance (which I’ve never used) and pension (which apparently is going to be fucked when I’m retirement age) totally fucks me over right now. I’m all for universal healthcare (I mean truly universal, not the half-assed system we have right now) but I personally believe more efficient use of tax dollars can achieve that, not gouging me for even more.
The American reality is a bit different with the strong military-industrial complex, one could argue a lot more of those funds would be better spent elsewhere but I think you guys also have a problem with efficient use of tax funds.
I suppose this is all to say that I agree with some of the goals of more socialist views but I’ll be damned if it’s going to come at the cost of hardworking individuals who are already being taxed to fuck.

No matter the inefficiencies - and no system is going to be perfectly efficient, IMNSHO the typical Canadian taxpayer receives a greater ROI on his contribution than his south of the border counterpart.

Hong Kong is part of China . China has at least 260 nuclear warheads. Interfering in their affairs is a stupid idea. Perhaps we should “liberate” St. Petersburg as well?

we exist as a mixed economy, true. However, the end of the line for socialism IS authoritarianism. I.E the government owning and operating each part of the economy. Hence, my reluctance to surrender any freedom.

This was 100% a sarcastic jab. Minus my unabashed hatred for socialism. It’s grammatically/lingustically
impossible for chinese citizens to be patriotic towards A
merica.
I’m not aware there is even a term for that, but I
didn’t major in government.

Copied and pasted dictionary definitions, devoid of interpretation or honest independent thought, are seldom applicable to the world, especially in anything related to the socio-political realm. They do make for a disingenuous cop out though, the so-called right loves that strategy.
True socialism has never existed as a pure dictionary definition, just like capitalism or communism. Human nature prevents all of them, they are fairytales preached to deceive the masses. China is most definitely not socialist, nor communist, nor capitalist. The US is not capitalist either, but does practice a fun type of socialism where losses are socialized while profits are privatized, hence growing wealth and income chasms

Thanks for the clarification.
Unfortunately, they aren’t suffering because of socialism, they are suffering due to authoritarianism and kleptocracy. The current American regime seems to have a romantic attraction to both ideals. 45 has yet to meet an authoritarian he doesn’t like, and the graft is perpetual.
I could see a repressed person in China having more fondness for the US than for their own country.

In a socialist society, the government serves the people and is run by the people (in a socialist society, that absolute authority leads to a dictatorship, oligarchy, or other authoritarian rule). However, if you are burdened by crushing debt from your education, medical, or legal costs you aren’t really free.
Of course, as you are out competed by the privileged class or established corporate overlords. You’ll also gladly abandon one freedom after another in exchange for promises of security. The ‘game’ is rigged, and if you haven’t already won, you never will.
Chains aren’t the only way to bind a citizenry to servitude.

it’s the nature of the citizenry to be oppressed. Who do you want to give absolute power to?

Not asking for that. But copying and pasting something from an online dictionary is kind of funny.
“Socialism” is almost like a weasel word for the American right these days, just used to scare the base and draw ire.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely, no entity should have absolute power. Limited power with checks and balances is the only way to go.

If you develop a capitalist system to Smith’s conclusion you also end up with what would be practically an authoritarian regime. The issue here isn’t that China is socialist , the issue here is that China is authoritarian.

I can appreciate that (though I’m ashamed to admit I didn’t see it at first). It is an interesting and tense situation. China has incentives to not crackdown hard on Hong Kong, especially in terms of their international standing and future aspirations. They also have domestic incentives, where they have described the protests are rioters and criminals coerced by the outside world that they’re not going to want to be seen as tolerating or being weak against. I’m not sure how it’ll end, and am afraid the end could be quite bloody..
