Spent the day water carting. We are running low on our potable water and our laundry and stock water were pretty much out. We have been thoroughly crueler by the absence of rain (which supplies our house and property).
Fortunately, there is a public watering point about 10 km away. It is supplied by a natural spring that was dammed way back in the day. There are many of us using it each day for stock and domestic water.
Buggered if I know what I’m going to do for fire fighting water this year as 750 litres at a time is not going to cut it...

We had a dry spring up here which was real bad for fires. All the ones we attended were caused by people not paying attention. Hopefully, even if there are no fire bans where you’re at, people can put two and two together to not do stupid shit.

Good luck. We had one storm this monsoon season and it was light. Still hitting 43C temps in September. This desert has been in a drought for almost my whole life but people still keep moving here. I’m in the first semester of my hydrology program, and the coursework is confirming how fucked I thought we were.

Thanks! This isn’t a desert. Yet .
We are supposed to average roughly 650 mm per annum with most of it in the summer. The last two calendar years in a row we got in the low 300's...which hasn’t happened since records began back in the 1880s. This will probably be the third calendar year in a row...
Fire season has already begun...twelve houses have been lost so far since Friday in northern NSW and southern Queensland (even more drought ravaged than here). ..and yet here I stand at 15 degrees centigrade. And the place could still carry a flame...

Lets hope the water situation changes soon for you all out there.
Not too much water but a consistent regular amount.

Last Thursday and Friday were both TOBAN days in my region . Friday ended with a quality duststorm...but at least we weren’t dealing with what Tenterfield had to deal with. It’s a decent sized little place a few hours northeast of here. A grass fire ran into the edge of it and took two houses, a car yard and the pistol club...and very nearly the life of a volunteer firefighter (even that is touch and go at this stage).

Absolutely fuck no...!
There was a hazard reduction burn last week in an area not far from which really didn’t have enough fuel and under a light wind and air temps under 20 degrees . It was expected to not carry beyond the day nor burn the actual planned area . It burned for three days and spotted repeatedly...burned everything.
We are in deep shit.

We average about 200mm of rain here. So far we’ve received about 130mm. The scary part is there’s over 5 million people in this valley, and the canals we use were originally dug by a civilization that disappeared a millennia ago. Of course we are much more prepared than them and dug a canal cutting through the entire state. Unfortunately it’s source is also now drying out. Progress!
Good luck on the fires. I have a buddy who’s a hotshot. He’s thought about going to Australia during our offseason and fighting fires, but our offseason is so disappearing.
Full of the sound of the Gran Fury, signifying nothing.
