It has taken me a long time to realize this fundamental truth, never so apparent as when I do drywall work. The big difference between SWI (Sweat Equity, Inc.) and the pros isn’t the always end result, it is the time it takes to get there. No critiques on technique from the peanut gallery please.

I learned this when I painted the racecar myself. I result came out way better than I would’ve ever imagined, but I will never do it again. I used to think bodywork was expensive, but I now I know exactly what you’re paying for. I had probably close to 60 hours of time into it by the time I was done cutting and buffing. I would consider painting a body panel again, but I’ll never paint another car myself.

I’m super bad at sheet goods. I did OSB walls in my workshop and I F’d up EVERY. SINGLE. ONE of the myriad electrical outlets.

My father has been a carpenter and home improver for forever. He has done it all. He swore off drywall and painting a long time ago.

That is another excellent example, takes me forever to sand, fill, and prep for paint, and I still end up with a dimple or ripple when the light hits it right. I take a lot more time and still don't get it quite right.

We pulled down some wood panel and put up drywall in our living room when we bought our house last year . Such a PITA. The one thing I did learn was to use the widest putty knife you can find, then you have more area to blend your mistakes in.

Watching the guys repair the drywall after our flood, it's amazing how fast they do a better job than you could.

Drywall is something I will gladly pay someone to do if it’s more than a small room. I’m very happy with the end result when I do it, but it just takes so damn long & isn’t even remotely fun.

exactly, I don't have the skill to skim it a couple times, lightly sand, and call it good.

The one thing that scares me though, is that I’ve seen a lot of bad tape jobs done by ‘pros’

I think they just do a better job covering up when painting
