Peated Irish Whiskey? Yes, please.

Kinja'd!!!

The library drinking club is having a meeting tomorrow night, so after work today I stopped off to procure the requisite ethanol containing beverage. I prefer my w hiskey to taste like biting into a burning chunk of peat, so Islay Scotches are my thing. However, I spotted this peated Irish whiskey.

Kinja'd!!!

I like my whiskey peated, and I’ve been to Connemara, so I was curious. I’ve never had a peated Irish whiskey before.

Kinja'd!!!

I had to test it tonight. You know, for science. At only 80 proof, it is plenty smooth. The peat isn’t as in your face as the Islay whiskeys I usually drink, but that smokey goodness is still there. It lingers on the finish after a smooth, buttery welcome. I declare it fit for human consumption.

Kinja'd!!!

I’m looking forward to sharing this bottle tomorrow evening.

I’ve not had Connemar a for years.

I may have to revisit it.

I’ll toast your beverage with a very large Teeling.

((old picture, the glass in front of me now is twice as full)).

I’m struck by how smooth it is. It was reasonably priced, too, at $40/bottle. That is one damned  smooth whi skey for the price point.

It’s been years but Connemara was priced on a par with Bushmills back then , but in recent years Bushmills has dropped right off of my list with so many better whiskeys for less money.

This is way better than any B ushmills I’ve ever had.

The best Bushmills I had was the 21 y ear old but since then, also every whiskey I’ve had since has been just as good or better.

I’ve never had one nearly that old, so my Bushmills point of reference  is likely woefully incomplete.

I had a 25 year old Campbeltown Springbank (a friend owned the Whisky Castle in Tomintoul, Scotland, for the centenary he bottled a cask from his private collection).

Definitely a good choice,

A friend of mine introduced me to Connemara about 3 months ago, really a nice whiskey.

Especially for people who thought they are really not into “smokey” flavored whiskey, like myself.

It definitely strikes me as a way to introduce folks to the nectar of the gods in the form of peated whiskeys.

I was in the same boat last winter. I enjoy my peat and the only Irish whiskey I’d had was Jameson in my early 20's. I bought a variety pack of airplane bottles containing different expressions of peated whiskies and the Connemara was a standout. I liked how the peat was balanced with the sweetness and also added a texture that was almost velvety.

I haven’t bought a bottle yet but probably will at some point. The German market just received a 10 year old version. When I see this on the shelf I’ll probably pick it up.

Yes. I have a feeling this particular bottle may not survive the night, but I’m thinking I should pickup another bottle as one to keep on hand in the cabinet .

Over the last few days I’ve started my window shopping for the season and was reminded of another whisky in the sample pack I mentioned. I thought of our discussion.

If you like the Connemara, you may also like Ardmore Legacy. A peated highland scotch with the same price as the C onnemara. Like the Connemara it’s lightly peated and uses it to mellow and better integrate the flavors and give the malt more body. Very good, cheap and worth every penny .

I’ll have to keep an eye out for it.
