Without this chopped up 17mm I’d have no way of securing my seat to my car, as the rear bolts that fasten the seat rails to the floor pan are as close to inaccessible as can be. I’ve tried bolting the seat rails down first, then attaching the seat to the rails, but that’s even worse. Gotta go in as a full unit.

Someone’s coming to look at the Miata today, and it sounds like he’s ready to buy. Fingers crossed!

Nice. I’ve got a 16mm like that for power steering hose fittings on the back of the pump on GMT400 trucks. I’ve also got one another one in a size I don’t remember for fuel line fitting when changing the fuel filter on an LT1 C4 vette where the filter lives on the frame rail just above the cat on that side.

I used to go hiking with a bunch of guys, one fo them was an ex-boyscout and proudly showed off his toothbrush with the handle half cut off “for weight savings, you’re a sucker hauling around all that gear!”

who was the sucker come bedtime and I just brushed my teeth with ease with my extra few grams of full size toothbrush

I did that. Also 17mm, but for a less-cool car.

I've got a flex head ratcheting wrench set specifically for this purpose. I thought it was a 14mm bolt for the seat but it's a been a little bit since I've removed it so it could have been 17 I guess. The bolt holes in my car are f'd up though so I can't get it to tighten properly. I think I need to helicoil them or something since that's the hardest part to take the seat in and out. I know your struggle oh so well though lol.

You know how the leading edge of the brackets interferes with the lip of the seat? I cut and rewelded that section to follow the curve of the seat to get the seats even further back. They literally press up against the floor and back frame. My flex ratchet didn’t work

I need to try helicoils sometime. I wish I'd known about them earlier lol

Sounds like the weight weenies in the cycling world. “Saved five grams by installing a titanium water bottle cage!” To which I respond, “I saved even more weight  by taking a leak this morning and it didn’t cost me $200!”

there was a good thread on honda-tech quite some time ago about people stirpping the interior of their civic to save 25lbs, when it’s far simpler to strip 25lbs from the typical american through diet.

Next time you’re in there, contemplate how you would di sconnect the power steering lines from the rack. Now imagine they’re rusted in place.

Ahh yeah that will do it lol. I don't even have my seat adjusted all the way back in the bracket since I wanted to sit close enough. My legs are a little crammed that way but otherwise I wouldn't be able to get a proper reach on the steering wheel and I'd have less control over the car. I could go for it being lower but I think I'd have to cut the floor to achieve anything lower. Not entirely out of the picture though since the bolt holes are borked anyways.

Not looking good. The guy stopped texting me last night after saying he wanted to look at the bike today. Still haven’t heard from him...

Also called everywhere and there isn’t an XSR900 nearby I can try I’m going to be riding an MT-09 as a consolation prize in about twenty minutes though

Steering wheel spacer? It took me forever but I finally got to a point where I can fully extend my legs, and still keep a good bend in the arms, all while fitting under the soft top! Seat isn’t centered which is causes some aches after awhile, but that’s the best I can do...

Do the NBs have the raised section that the seats sit on like the NA s?

Yup the seat mount hump is there in both! I’ve always fit under the soft top nicely after I put in the seat, even with the padding installed. But with the seat padding removed and my helmet on, I’m only like less than an inch under the roll bar. It’s “good enough” to not look dangerous, especially since the roll bar padding adds almost another inch on top of that but I’d like to be a little further down to not compress my spine at all. It’s lower on the priority list but it’s certainly something I’d like to look into some day.

I had to do that when doing coilovers on the Z3. Whatever fucking idiot had previously installed the H and R springs had decided to get rid of the factory studs that come up through the strut and use some sort of plastic or PVC like white spacer on top of the strut and then use bolts on top with nuts underneath to hold it on. The nuts on the bottom side of it were in the most impossible to reach spot with no clearance so I had to chop a wrench to get it to fit and then I cut my hand on it breaking them free.

Made dropping the struts from the easiest task where you basically just loosen the three top nuts on the struts to a nightmare
