TIL learned that one of the breweries in town does bingo in the early evenings. I wasn’t expecting that when I walked in, and the bingo was crowd was as old as you might expect. I decided that while I support beer and bingo as a concept, I’m in no way old enough to partake.
For the second part, I saw a couple of young teenage kids walking around in tan boat shoes, crew length black athletic socks pulled up and black gym shorts with T-shirts. This is not a look I’ve seen on the university campus. Were these a couple of weirdos, or is there a new trend among kids these days?

I’ve seen late teens early twenties kids dressed like this. The one’s I’ve known who did so were all shitheads.
The boat shoes were sometimes substituted for those shitty foam sandles.
I call the look prisoner chic.

Given both cases...you are in deep shit ...it appears your current locality has time warped back to the late 1980s.

Admittedly, this is not a brewery I usually frequent, but I like to spread my beer drinking around on occasion.

Crew socks with boat shoes are a thing for some reason. I’ve seen it on teens up to college frat bros.

The middle schoolers for quite some time have been sporting black socks pulled all the way up and flip flops ... Errrrr , slides. They call them slides. I still find it bizzare, and I’ve been seeing it long enough that some of those kids are college age now.
Some friends of mine in college used to frequent the local Friday night church bingo before we'd hit the bars. It was actually pretty fun.

It was a couple of years ago, but some of my band kids (relatively cool ones, even) had taken to wearing crocs with socks. I’ve given up understanding the youths.

Bingo used to be an older womans game, now here in the U.K. all ages and genders enjoy it.
But ye’, beer and bingo doesn’t go down for me.
Here we have a bar and hair salon.
and ‘cakes and ale’ cafe in the back of a book shop.

The first kid I asked about the socks and sandel s thing years ago, started showing back up in the school field drunk/high last school year. He died this summer, he was 19. He was a nice enough kid, but never could pull his shit together.

I’m old at 38 , but when we were kids wearing socks with sandels was exclusively the domain of old men. The world has turned upside down!

Yeah that seems pretty normal. Now throwing boat shoes into the mix is a bit strange...

I’m not with it, but I’ve heard no show socks are out and crew socks are in (no way I wear long socks unless it is less than 50 out, and probably not even then).
No idea about the rest.

My wife has criticized me for going out in “crocs with socks”.
At 40(ish) I'm apparently on trend!

If that’s the case, does that mean he’ll have access to some sweet targa top
and pop up headlight sporting vehicles? This might not be such a bad thing..

I went to a bingo hall when I lived in North Carolina on a Friday night and that shit was intense. In areas without gambling, people try to win money playing bingo. Most of the regulars would play at least 4 or 5 bingo cards simultaneously, and games were rapid fire. The place was very smoky, and the crowd was all over the place in terms of age.

Interesting. Out here there is gambling on reservations nearby, so that itch can be scratched with more than bingo. This didn't look serious.

So my wife hates it when I wear ( normal) socks with shorts. Can I tell her this is acceptable nowadays?

Sock and sandals is a little different from socks and slides.
Slides started off as just something to wear on the way to the basketball court or soccer field, before you put your shoes or cleats on, so it makes perfect sense that you’d have your socks on, ready to go.
But yeah, socks with anything that shows your sock-covered toes/ankles seems really weird to me, too.

I honestly can’t imagine.
Closest I’ve come to something like this is a couple years back, in a neighborhood about a mile from ours, two teenagers killed their parents and some of their siblings (two sisters survived). I hate that I’m going to have to reveal the full extent of how much evil there is in the world to my kids at some point... I’m waiting as long as I can.
