Shame no dash cam video. Saw an older woman driving the wrong way in a roundabout today in Greenwood, Indiana. Thankfully no injuries, but she did come very close to hitting a motorcyclist head-on (admittedly at a  very slow speed).

Truly a utonomous vehicles would be fantastic in a lot of ways. Hopefully they’ll eventually get here, and hopefully they won’t remove our ability to drive (but I’m confident I’ll be old and drooling by then so that’s someone else’s problem).

Had an elderly man say to me, “I don’t know how to use that roundy-round”. He did the same thing, went in wrong way.

Periodic restesting would be good... I mean honestly I was just thinking how weird it that states let you transfer licenses without even a written test, despite the fact that some traffic laws vary from state to state. Even within a state there are changes in intersection design, road markings, and so forth that happen from time to time. Having people take a written test at renewal, and maybe even a driving test (simulated if that’s easier), to make sure they have the required knowledge and ability would be a big improvement.

Granted I’m sure there will always be people who even if they know how a roundabout works, think it’s no big deal to go the wrong way to save a few seconds, but making sure everyone has a reasonable idea of what the rules are is at the very least the starting place you need to get to, and then you can decide if breaking those rules should result in license revoc ation, required classes, or whatever else.

I live near a suburban road that’s 2 lanes each way with a couple of stretches divided by big park-like medians. More than once I’ve seen cars go the wrong way pulling out of a parking lot by one of those divided spots. On the one hand, it’s not extremely well-marked. On the other, you obviously drove in so why don’t you remember the road you came in on?

Though I think there’s a reasonable chance that any random driver coming out of that particular parking lot might be high as a kite....
