"mazda616" (mazda616)

Spoiler alert: It didn’t go well. Our days as a Mazda household will end in six-ish months. Le sigh.
This is the one we drove:
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
I adored it. Plenty of power. Smooth drive. Comfy seats. Lots of electronic gizmos (head-up display, 360° camera, heated/cooled seats, etc.). Gorgeous design (in my opinion).
My wife...didn’t like it. She said it felt “cramped.” And it was “not enough of an upgrade over our CX-5.” She said the center
console was too big, infringing on leg space, and the thick A-pillars made large blind spots. Her verdict was that
it felt “too much like a car.” Which is probably why I liked it so much. :-( I love
my 6 and the way it drives and this felt like a 3-row 6.
It didn’t help that this dealer has 8 Mazdas in stock (literally) and their salesmen know NOTHING about them. This one was even out of gas when we tried to test drive it. It literally said “Range: 0 miles.” We had to stop at a gas station just to be able to test drive it on the highway. It’s obvious that this dealer only wants people driving Fords.
At the end of the test drive, my wife said “Does Honda or Toyota make a three-row SUV?”
Oh well. Life goes on. I was hoping we could extend the Mazda tradition, but it’s her car and I want her to be happy.
Have a sad Mazda for your time.

Ascent or something similar unless you want a minivan?

Well that sucks. Dealers can make or break this kind of stuff, too.
How about a Subaru Ascent?

Try the new Explorer? At least it looks pretty good compared to the rest of the Japanese competition.
My wife vetoed a CX-5 for the same reasons years ago ...she said the steering was too direct and sporty. I was like “EXACTLY!”. We ended up with a Crosstrek, it was fine.

Highlander isn’t too shabby. I think a Sienna or Odyssey is the way to go though.

No minivan. I don’t like any that are on the market and their crash test ratings aren’t good enough. Internet says Odyssey but everyone I know that has owned an Odyssey has had major problems.

Interesting idea. The only downside to that is the Subaru dealer is 40 minutes away.

Yeah, that is a downside.
My nearest F ord dealer is probably 130 kilometres away , so I’m really not that good at recommending vehicles based on local support.

I had her Google the Ascent and she’s in love with it now. Wants to drive one ASAP.

Do Mazda have the same warranty in the states?
Here in Canada it’s unlimited mileage but is still 3 and 5 years.

Too much like a car? You should test drive a three row Tahoe next. A little psychology....

Mazda specifically makes their CUVs to drive like cars. Sounds like your wife wants something that feels more like a truck.
It’s too bad you’ve ruled out a minivan, because it sounds like just what you need. I wouldn’t give an Odyssey or Sienna the time of day either, but of course I like the Sedona a lot, and the Pacifica is worth looking at.
Barring that though, perhaps a Tahoe or Explorer will rev her engine more.

Honda Pilots are pretty nice nowadays. A used MDX might be worth looking into as well. From what I hear they’re not too bad to drive either; the V6 pulls pretty hard.

Both the Pilot and Highlander are not bad cars. My boss’s boss just traded in her Rav4 for a new Highlander which is very nice. Honestly, I’d probably choose the Honda for a big 3 row rig, (even though the CX 9 is sexier looking....)

My wife and I test drove a CX-5 and CX-9 a while back. We had similar concerns about both cars. The center console is absolutely massive. It makes the car (especially the CX-5) feel smaller than it already is. The footwells in both cars are very tight (for my size 13 feet). Overall, both cars felt cramped.
My wife nixed the CX-5 a few blocks into our test drive. She liked the CX-9, but felt it would become uncomfortable on long drives.
Ended up with an Accord.

I just don’t see the point in going all out and getting a minivan when we plan to have a maximum of two kids. I personally don’t even think we need a three-row SUV, but she disagrees.
I want to have both Mazdas paid off and keep them until they become troublesome.

Nope. They just have the standard 5 years/60,000 mike powertrain and 3 years/36,000 mile bumper-to-bumper.

I just don’t like minivans. I don’t like FCA products (I don’t trust them), so that rules out the Pacifica. And, the Grand Caravan is ancient and has bad crash test ratings.
Sienna and Odyssey are overpriced, especially used . Sedona has dubious reliability ratings (so I’ve heard) and will likely be discontinued due to low sales, anyway.

I’m going to look at a Pilot. They’re pricey, though, for what they are.

And my wife definitely doesn’t need a large crossover with AWD to haul ou r zero kids through our nonexistent winters.
But guess what her next car will be ;)

Likely going to the Kia and Subaru dealers this weekend to test drive a Telluride and an Ascent.

Mazda has done a great job of making a more-premium feeling mainstream car but they’re not great at interior packaging efficiency.
I don’t love the seats in my wife’s ’18 CX-5. The bottom cushions aren’t quite long enough front to back. I’ve been driving BMWs with M Sport seats with adjustable thigh bolsters for 6+ years and really like having some thigh support, so the CX-5's lack of thigh support bugs me a little.
What bugs me more is the center console needlessly encroaches on the driver’s
right knee room. It doesn’t get in my way as a passenger, but as a driver it does because my right leg is moving to use the pedals.
The CR-V isn’t much bigger overall but the inside is positively cavernous compared to the CX-5.
If you want to stay on the small end of the 3-row spectrum, maybe check out the Kia Sorento? It’s not nearly as big as some of the others (hence the need for the Telluride) but maybe it could work for you...

The Sedona has been fabulous for us. I wouldn’t worry about it. That said, y our first sentence is all the reason you need. I understand. You like what you like. I never would have considered a minivan, but my wife didn’t like any of the CUVs she tried and insisted on it. So my situation was kinda the opposite of yours.

Oddly enough my wife wants to get a 3 hatchback as her next car, and wants us to get a CX-9 as the spare/road trip car, although she hasn’t driven any of them yet.
