The driver kept his hands off the wheel for all but 51 seconds of the final drive segment and received numerous alerts to place his hands back on the wheel, the documents showed. . . .
“I was having a coffee and a bagel. And all I remember, that truck, and then I just saw the boom in my face and that was it,” the man behind the wheel told the NTSB.

But isn’t that how something called “Autopilot” is supposed to work?

I honestly hope they’ll be forced to change the branding...

No sympathy for inattentive driving, autopilot or not.

Well that’s *not* how it works on aircraft...

I’d trust Otto over Tesla any day of the week.

I’d be shocked if it was any other brand of car.

Better.
Eh... not really. You can trust a co-pilot to take over controls while you go take a leak. We’re definitely not there yet.

Those of us who are not pilots understand an autopilot as some kind of machine that flies the plane for you so logically an autopilot in a car should do the same

By the way, Airplane is on Amazon prime right now. It’s a bit dated but still has some very funny parts.
“I picked the wrong day to give up smoking” is still pretty good but the Jewish jokes and the “jive” talkers don’t work very well.

And it does do that. But in an aircraft, the pilot still has to maintain situational awareness and monitor systems, too. The pilot can’t just climb in back and take a nap.
I agree that it’s a terrible name for the system, though.
This wreck was completely the fault of both the driver and the autopilot. Fix either one and there’s no accident. Better yet, fix both.
