Kinja'd!!!

I was wondering what version to install, my school uses Ubuntu, so I thought about that one, while a friend of mine has Pop, which is a derivative of Ubuntu.

I thought about Mint as well, but I’m not well versed in the Linux-verse... so I could do with some suggestions.

I’m mostly in the Windows world these days, but I used elementary OS some last time I was playing around with Linux and it seemed pretty nice (it’s Ubuntu-based IIRC). Obviously coming from Windows I switched some of the more OS X style things around. Biggest complaint was the stupid “pretend it’s not free” thing on their website (you can set a custom “purchase” price of $0 if you want your free software to actually be free).

I also run Lubuntu on my ancient netbook, and it’s great for that, but also probably not what you are looking for.

Mint here representing, it is a great distro that has overtaken Ubuntu for non-Kali related activities. I use it on my server, workstation, and laptops.

I’ve used Ubuntu, Xubuntu, and Lubuntu for the desktop, for the most part they work fine. For servers, our customers tend to use CentOS which is the free OS on which RHEL is based, I think?

Whatever you pick, make sure that you can get all the same packages/ libraries/ tools that your school distro has. Even using a different package manager (yum vs apt, for example) can make life difficult.

I run stock Ubuntu on my laptop (19.04 as of this writing.) I find their re-skin of GNOME to work fine for me. Ubuntu is really the safest option since debian/Ubuntu is consistently one of the main “target” platforms for software applications. Pretty much any .deb (debian/Ubuntu) or .rpm (Red Hat/Fedora) is a safe choice.

the nice thing is that all of the Ubuntu derivatives (Mint, elementary, etc.) are nearly 100% work-alike to Ubuntu under the hood.

Ubuntu has the benefit of being very stable, and that I’m more familiar to it... but I don’t like the graphic interface that much.

My friend only chose P op because his computer has independent graphics, and it came with the Nvidia drivers from the box... But I’m strongly considering Ubuntu because of the stability and support.

Indeed, I usually run Kali in VMs on Mint. It is a really nice, lightweight distro that kind of bridges a lot of gaps for me. It has some much nicer tools (like a visual cron function) that makes system management much easier.

nvidia is easy, you just run the “additional drivers” program in the Ubuntu app menu and it should find them.

one good thing is that FreeCad runs on Linux; it’s a somewhat-CATIA-workalike.  The CAD engine is different but the interface and operation are somewhat close to CATIA.  So if you know one, you don’t have to shell out a ton of money to Dassault.

I run Ubuntu on my laptops (well, my ancient laptop is running an older version of Mint) and desktops. My kids have grown up with Ubuntu. Heck, even my computer illiterate wife can use Ubuntu.

I switched to Linux years ago due to Apple totally ignoring OS X/desktops and MS sucking so bad with 8/10. Ubuntu has been very solid with minimal issues (NVIDIA being the biggest problem). Far more reliable than any OS that MS has available (working with 10/2016 at work) and easier to use than many of the other Linux variants I have used.

Big issue with Ubuntu is that it is not a lite-weight OS. If you are using older hardware (my ancient laptop is a Core 2 Duo), then you will want to look at a lite-weight variant like Lubuntu.

Something tells me he’s also a bit smug that he’s the only one running Pop as opposed to Mint or Ubuntu.

I’ll check freecad out, but I don’t have high expectations for this computer, and the intel 620 UHD graphics.

unless you’re dealing with complex models (e.g. an entire car) the 620 should be adequate.  I can manipulate entire systems (interiors etc.) on my laptop with the Intel 630 graphics.  Granted, it’s in TcVis and not directly in CATIA but still...

I use CentOS 7 daily for work . There’s also Puppy running on an old machine that really can’t handle much.

I like CentOS, it walks a good line between supported and free.

Yup! I have a Win10 high-power desktop for gaming and stuff, but my Media Center PC and daily use laptop run Linux Mint 19.2...it’s based on Ubuntu, so everything for Ubuntu works with it pretty much no issue. There are different variants with various Window Managers, but I stick with MATE as it’s pretty comparable to what people are used to with a Windows-style interface...I’m not a fan of the Unity/Gnome 3 window manager in the more recent versions of Ubuntu.

If you need any pointers for what software to use or fun / other tweaks you can do, let me know! :)

Both Mint and Ubuntu are good. Mint is better if you want all the video/music playing stuff to work without any additional grief. Only other thing I would say to consider is that if your school provides central compute resources (ie a compute cluster)  you should check to see what they are running. If they run Red Hat then you should consider running CentOS as it’s as close to running RHEL as you can get without actually having to buy a license, and will make moving your jobs over a little more seamless.

typing “apt-get install ‘package name’” in terminus isn’t so difficult. Neither is using the provided GUI package management tool if you prefer point and click.

Really no different in difficulty than double-clicking on a .msi file in windows then answering the installation questions.

As far as I’m aware. I downloaded from their official download page, and it shows LTS through 2023. Also, using the Cinnamon desktop.

I’ll add that I have lots of RHEL experience as my company had been using it for ages up until this year.  We converted over to CentOS, and while I’m still getting my legs under me there, it hasn’t been too awful an experience.

I already ran into some problems.

Ubuntu is pretty light, but I’ve gotten close to 100C temps on the CPU without the fan turning on, so something tells me it’s not being detected.

I tried using sensors, and fancontrol. but I can’t seem to find out if my fan was detected.

did you run into similar problems with the fans?

Kinja'd!!! RallyDarkstrike - Fan of 2-cyl FIATs, Eastern Bloc & Kei cars > Spanfeller is a twat
09/05/2019 at 12:58

Kinja'd!!!0

The fan not turning on shouldn’t be completely dependent on the OS I would think...that’s usually at least partially a BIOS thing...?

I’ve never once had an issue with a fan not coming on. Are you sure the fan is working / didn’t jiggle itself unplugged?

What model laptop and I’ll do some research for you. FYI, as I am sure you know, I wouldn’t run it with temps that hot for the time being - try using another device until we get this sorted as we don’t want your CPU to cook...

If you install PSensor on Ubuntu or Linux Mint is a great program for displaying temps btw.

OK, lemme see if I can find anything and I’ll post on the Ubuntu forums on your behalf...not sure if you have an account there (I’ve had one for years now), but, if so, you can post in the thread and if not, you can watch and we’ll see what people suggest - they tend to be quite helpful! :)

I imagine it’s just that a module just needs to be loaded or something....I do know Lenovo can be a bit proprietary at times...

Thread is here:

https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2426169

If you want something to do in the meantime, for the heck of it to see if it’s an Ubuntu-only issue, you could try downloading and setting up a LiveUSB for Manjaro Linux and doing a live boot into that. It won’t mess with your Ubuntu or Windows install, but if the fan DOES work in Manjaro, we’d know it’s an Ubuntu-specific issue (as Manjaro is based on Arch Linux).

I did think about running a live version to check if it was with the install, but then I went into the Lenovo BIOS and changed thermal management from “intelligent” to “Performance” and I finally caught the sucker running.

it still doesn’t detect the fans on the terminal... so I’m gonna keep an eye on the thread! Maybe there’s a less archaic solution to this issue

Oh, yay, at least it’s working and wasn’t a major hassle to fix!

So the fans just run constantly now? Are they running at max all the time...?

Anything else I can do to help out, just let me know! It’s pretty nerdy of me, I know, lol, but I like spreading Linux as an option as there is still a lot of people who consider it super overly buggy...your situation doesn’t exactly completely dissuade that notion, but it didn’t take long to find a seemingly usable solution and hopefully it will work well for you. :)

The temperature hits 65+ and it turns on momentarily until it goes down to 45-50.

certainly strange, but hey, at least I’m not running dangerously hot.

I ran all the benchmarks, one of the cores hit 90, and then went down to 55-ish during the remainder of the test....

Ah, that doesn’t seem too bad, eh? Need any software recommendations?

Krita is a great Photoshop replacement. I use it in collaboration with Pinta for image editing.

Redshift is a program similar to ‘Night Shift’ on Windows 10 that tints the screen coloring towards red as it approaches dusk/night to make it easier on the eyes.

Remmina is a good RDP/VNC, etc Remote Desktop client if you need one.

Vokoscreen is a good screen-recorder program if you ever need one.

Shotcut is a great open-source video editor (which is also available for Windows as well!)

If you want some little games to pass the time for a few minutes once and awhile instead of playing something on Steam or whathaveyou, try KBounce (like old-school Jezzball on Windows!), Funny Boat, Neverball or SuperTux (a Linux Super Mario clone :P)

Converseen is a great batch image-converter. I use it to convert a lot of PNG pictures into JPG en masse to save hard drive space every once and awhile.

LinSSID is a great WiFi info tool.

Cairo Dock is a great and very customizable icon dock program - I use it on the right side of my desktop with all my most-used programs to keep my desktop relatively clean...it’s also nice eye candy.

Cool Retro Term is also some fun eye candy for when you need to do things in Terminal! ;)

GSmartControl is great for checking on your hard drives (it shows SMART diagnostic data to tell you about their health, etc)

HardInfo is a great system information tool.

GParted is a great partition editor for your hard drives.

Timeshift can be really useful in the event of issues, think of it like a Linux version of Windows’ ‘System Restore Point’ feature.

Baobab is a great visual hard drive / file reference tool to see what’s on your hard drive and how much space things are taking up. Also get K4DirStat as it is also a great program for this using a different visual style.

No idea how much any of that is useful to you....some may already be installed in Ubuntu, but no harm in passing along useful/fun info!
