What I’m really scared about is how popular shooters are across some pages on the internet. Even if guns are illegal here, and there isn’t a “gun” culture, I’m at times slightly worried about the possibility of a would-be shooter finding those online forums, buying a gun from the black market, and striking someone. We don’t have the same kind of divisions that the US population has, but still...

The legendary Bill Bonds on Lennon’s death, but just substitute in one of any of the dozens of recent incidents and it’s still as true as it was in December of 1980.

And yet where are all these “red-blooded, gun-toting” wannabe’s when a real incident happens ? Crouching in a corner stroking their guns. Very few (if any) of these incidents are stopped by armed civilians, it’s law-enforcement that has to deal with it because politicians are cowards.
Take away their security details and metal detectors ... let them go through what the rest of us go through.

Mexico definitely has a gun culture and there’s no need to purchase guns on the black market. Mexicans can just come to Arizona.
Also, Mexico would be an example people point to as why the US needs the 2nd Amendment.

Buying a gun in Arizona and taking it to Mexico would be using a black market. Also, even up north unless you’re dealing with ranchers, people don’t have a fascination with guns, not like Americans do.
I don’t understand why this country would be an example of why you guys need the 2nd amendment.

I’ve known quite a few Mexicans who had just as much of a fascination with guns as any American I’ve known. There’s not a whole lot of difference in culture in the border region. I probably share more culturally with a Norteño than someone from Mexico City.
And there’s nothing black market about a gun show. The smuggling it in to Mexico is illegal, but the market itself is very much legal and out in the open. Arizona gun laws allow sales to non citizens in certain cases. I’ve worked with Mexican citizens who legally bought and carried firearms.
Having cartels run rickshaw through rural areas is a pretty good argument for letting the populace arm themselves and form militias (as they’ve done), not to mention the government abuses in southern Mexico against rural peoples and the history of violence against protestors in Mexico City. The Mexican populace has a rich history of forming militias to combat the abuses of various actors.

When I carried it was for personal protection, not to save anyone from a mass shooter. Had a friend shot to death in high school and another friend shoot and kill someone in self defense (guy was trying to stab him). I’m able to keep myself out of such situations better now than I could when I was younger. I still carry when backpacking in remote areas as I’ve come across some sketchy stuff, and relying on LE to save your ass isn’t really an option when you’re in the middle of the desert.

My buddy who lives in AZ said he’d move back to CA if the gun laws became more like AZ. I told him that won’t happen, in fact the rest of the nation is more likely to become more like CA than anything else.

A couple of years ago, the NRA sent a lobbyist down to Mexico so that they could explain the benefits of expanding gun rights, a bill emerged.
N
ot only did
congress (Which is a representative, democratic body) fail
the bill
, the conservative party is in general against
it. It has been suggested for a long time and every time it comes for a vote it fails. Mexicans don’t want guns, the gun culture here is limited to hunting. I would know this, my grandfather was an
important member of Mexico’s equivalent of the NRA.
If something is illegally trafficked, it involved a black market, but the semantics
don’
t even matter. It’s illegal for Mexicans to import weapons from the United States unless they have the permits from the secretariat of defense. Arizona’s laws
end
in Arizona. If I try to use Mexican pesos at a starbucks in Scottsdale there’s a fairly high probability
that they won’t be accepted, because MXN is not official US currency.
There’s one (1) community in the entire country that has effectively reduced violence by forming their own community police and kicking out the feds, it’s in Michoacan. The rest of the communities that adopted militias failed because the militias were not trained, or formed by local druglords, or corrupted. Evidently, many of those communities did not have the same amount of autonomy that the municipality I mentioned does thanks to their predominantly native population... But still. Less police and more civilian guns equals more crime in this country.
In fact, in many states the government sponsors voluntary disarmament
and they have proven to reduce violence.
Also, there are plenty of examples of countries where the government abused their power against a group of people or protestors at a city, and the solution to violence in those countries did not involve arming everyone to the teeth. Just because our government sucks doesn’t mean we A: Want more guns, or B: would improve with more of them.

If you’re in the middle of a mass shooter situation then stopping the maniac is self-defense (meets stand-your-groud criteria easily - heck the NRA would make sure any such person gets a medal and tons of publicity) .
My point was more about the idiots that parade themselves up and down the street open-carrying “sporting rifles” and body armor , usually at events held by the families of the victims of mass shooters.
Never seen one of those idiots step up when really needed.

For the record, I was not advocating for a “Mexican 2nd Amendment”, just pointing out that I’ve experienced first hand Mexican gun culture, and Americans pointing to Mexico as a case study as to why we should keep the 2nd Amendment. Personally, I couldn’t care less whether or not Mexicans have access to firearms.
As far as the NRA is concerned, my friends and I all own guns. None of us are NRA members. They aren’t very representative of American gun culture. They’re more representative of American gun manufacturing.
I hear you on the semantics of what constitutes a black market.

I’d still rather get hit by a 223 than a 308. We adopted the 223 as the 556 for Vietnam due to its capability to inflict a large wound for a small size. WW2 taught us ‘he who shoots most, wins the battle’. So small round = large magazine capacity with the capability to wound, which is better than kill when it comes to slowing down the enemy. You have to take care of your wounded battle buddy, the dead aren’t of as much concern. Sad stuff really that we have to put this much thought into it all.

No offense, but I don’t have the mental capacity to read it right now. I’m guessing it says that the 223/556 causes a lot of damage for a small round and no one should have it.
All I’m saying is that anything is going to hurt, and there are worse available.

I was just saying that on my side of the fence, what scares me are internet sites that promote criminal and violent behavior in discriminatory ways
.
What I meant about gun culture is that there’s a very small chance that a college student lives in a house with unlocked firearms and it would be virtually impossible for them to attain them legally, and even then for them to have access to a training site would be even more complicated.
Getting a gun illegally would still be very complicated for a college student. It can be done, I suppose, but it would bring them a lot further from their comfort zone than an air conditioned store at a strip mall would if they were in the US...
The sites however, could enable them to go and do it. That’s what scares me in this particular argument around
safety and violence (OP mentioned kids, I related it to attacks at academic institutions)

You’re jumping ahead as to why the 5.56 was choosen. ww2 showed that that the majority of combat took place at ranges much less than what the added benefits of a larger caliber make show.
Thus better rapid accuracy from reduced recoil. firing first is nice, but hitting a target is more important.
“ Several .223 cal AR-15s are sent to Lackland Air Force Base where they are tested and compared to the M2 carbine, which is currently in use, as well as the M14. During these tests, users of the AR-15 show two-fold increase in expert ratings compared to the M14.”

The effects of the round and reduced size are bonuses.

th e notion that the round was designed to maim, goes back to before ww2, when the garand was being adopted over the 1917.
Injured soldiers can still fight back. It is true that the round can tumble, but the greater leathality is due to cavitation due to the higher velocity.
