...are we on our way back to the dark ages?
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
We climbed down out of the trees for a reason, people: it’s not that complicated. Just get your kids vaccinated.
....and in an update to this, one of my engineers has just come down with a confirmed case, because his parents are morons and he was too dumb or complacent to find out his status and do something about it when the outbreak started.
So now everyone in the office who’s not known to be immune is assumed infected. So we’re having to send home a bunch of other dumb and complacent people who don’t know their status, until they can find out, and for those who aren’t immune, they have to self-quarantine for 14 days (and hope they haven’t already infected their family).
Jesus fucking wept.
Oh, and by the way, I’ve got a sore throat. Which had better not be the early symptoms of goddam measles, considering I’m both immunized and old enough to be in the naturally immune group! 99% effective =/= 100%.
Updated again :
Turns out that patient zero in our office actually was vaccinated, and is just one of the unlucky 1% on the losing side of “99% effective” . I humbly apologise to him and his parents.
Having done the math, if 90% of the population are vaccinated (for round numbers’ sake) , and the vaccination is 99% effective, and the vacc inated and non-vacci nated are as like l y as each o ther to get exposed, then around 10% of the victims of any outbreak will be vaccinated ones. So right now in NZ there are around 100 people who have a REALLY good reason to be pissed at the anti-vaxers.
H erd immunity: it’s not just good for morons and the high-risk .

Ding! This is the real answer. It’s my hope that it won’t take a full on epidemic in order to scare them into reality ... But we’ll see.
My mom was kind of hippy-ish, and the first rumblings of the anti-vac movement already existed way back then (‘81). She actually considered not vaccinating me, but when she mentioned that to our pediatrician ... Who, for context was a sweet diminutive little Dominican man that everyone adored ... He ripped her a new asshole. He sighted the same reason for why people didn’t take it seriously even then. Which is kind of ironic, as measles almost killed my mom when she was a toddler.
Thankfully she vaccinated me.

It’s really depressing. I don’t know how you combat the anti-elitism that’s running rampant these days. Obviously some skepticism is healthy but it’s totally weird to discount the knowledge of pretty much every doctor and researcher in favor of a few weird celebrities and mommy-bloggers.

Simple, some crooked doctor faked test results to make it look like some vaccines could make you sick, so that he could get rich selling his vaccines. Along the way celebutards latched on to the idea, and are telling their idiot followers on F acebook that chemikills in vaccines could give their kids T he A utism, so it’s better that they die from diseases our grandparents wiped out.
Social Media was a mistake.

You know, when you watch a clip of the current US president bickering with 2 democrats in the White House like a bunch of kids, with the national press in the same damn room, are situations like these really that surprising?

I’m curious about these people, they are against science and technology, yet they still wear cloths, use tools and live in houses and drive carriages.
So at what point did they say, ‘h mmm, no more technology from, erm, HERE!’.

But the Amish allow vaccines.

Time to put my otherwise useless knowledge to work.
The Amish split from their previous church sometime in the 1870’s. The general rule is any technology already place at the time is fine. They say they felt they were too focused on being worldly instead of focusing on the community and God.
I say general rule though because there are actually multiple levels as to how strict they are. Everything from “if you can’t get there by horse you can’t go” to “sure you can hire your neighbor to drive you there but no music of the way.” Some groups even allow electric lights as long as they were powered by batteries that were charged by neighbors using wind or solar generators. That means they’re powered by God’s power after all.

Yay! I got my MMR shots as a kid, so that’s nice (though I’m in the age range where a booster is sometimes recommended). I had a bad reaction to the TDAP (or DTAP?) vaccine though, so hopefully no one tries to give me whooping cough or something...

Where are you getting your info about becoming immune to measles with age? AFAIK, the only way to gain immunity is through sickness or vaccination, and neither are guaranteed , and could fade over time.
Anyone who’s concerned about their level of immunity should get their titers checked.

Well, our vaccine-autism conspiracy theories started with an English doctor and our current outbreak originated in Ukraine. So it’s not purely an American phenomenon.

Cheers for that, I always felt it was like vegetarians eating chicken style strips, because at one point, your not eating meat, but you are eating something made to look and taste like meat, so like the Amish swearing against technology, they are still using many forms of it.

According to health authorities, anyone born before the introduction of the vaccination (1 969 here) can be assumed to have been exposed in childhood because the disease was so prevalent back then. Which is why adult measles was rare even pre vaccinations - everyone either caught it as a kid or got exposed to a mild enough dose that their immune system could fight it off, rendering them “vaccinated”.
And yes, neither that nor vaccination is
a guarantee, it just dramatically improves your odds.

Assuming you’re immune without getting your titers checked isn’t a whole lot different than a parent assuming their kid won’t come in contact with the virus (and thus not vaccinating). A big assumption with no concrete evidence to back up the decision.

From the CDC:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Acceptable presumptive evidence of immunity against measles includes at least one of the following:
written documentation of adequate vaccination:one or more doses of a measles-containing vaccine administered on or after the first birthday for preschool-age children and adults not at high risktwo doses of measles-containing vaccine for school-age children and adults at high risk, including college students, healthcare personnel, and international travelers
laboratory evidence of immunity*
laboratory confirmation of measles
birth before 1957
https://www.cdc.gov/measles/hcp/index.html#immunity
Note that last item. Measles was once so widespread, that everyone was exposed to it.

It’s pretty crazy they would tell people to assume their immune, when a simple blood tells will give you a concrete answer. Assuming you’ve been exposed doesn’t seem a whole lot di fferent than assuming you haven’t been exposed to me. My degree is in h ealth s ciences, and I went and had my titers checked even though I knew I was vaccinated. Same with my sister (who’s a year away from becoming a CNP ), she ended up needing another shot.
I have a sneaky suspicion they may be changing that wording in the future.

Oh man, did that vaccine wipe me out for a couple days. I had a trip for work the next day and basically turned in the rental car the second I was done to take a nap in the airport. Couldn’t even drink my coffee with that hand my arm was so sore.
Then one of my band kids got whooping cough and they’re like yeah...it’s sort of a ten year vaccine but we don’t know if the whooping cough part is that effective but you’re good to go for tetanus!
