Spoiler alert: it broke down
As I was pulling into a parking lot, the oil light suddenly came on, and the engine died. Would not start back up, in fact the battery wouldn’t even turn over. Ducati came by to pick it up an hour later and the bike started, but the oil looked super milky so we decided to put it in the van to play it safe.
Where do I get my Oppo gift card for the full gear load out..? Thanks for lending me a jacket, Ducati
Any idea what happened?
I still got a solid three hours of riding in, and yeah. I’m in love. The bike is gorgeous, the friction zone is a million times easier to mess around in then the Grom I had, and the POWAH. It is present. I didn’t go up to redline, but I did a few 3rd gear pulls and let me tell you, all misgivings about selling the miata went out the window. I didn’t even get into sport mode, I just played around in touring. I can already tell that this is a good bike for me, in the sense that it’s easy to control, yet feels like it has a lot of room for me to grow into as a rider. Sounds good, too!
As for negatives... I felt a bit cramped when leaning over and going full sport bike bro, but I’m not sure if that’s a sizing issue or just the nature of an upright sport bike? I think I’d prefer to sit an inch or two further back, but I have to admit it’s nice to be able to cruise around totally upright. Definitely not a deal breaker, but I wouldn’t mind testing out a ninja or something just or comparisons sake.
I’m still going to test out a 1200 at some point. I really hope it doesn’t feel better ergonomically, because if that’s the case.... Well... A single side swingarm and adjustable suspension wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world... Or more horsepower than the Miata... In a bike...
With as great as the 821 felt, I’m not even going to bother with the 797.

So, the Volvo is gone, and the Miata will be in a few days at the price you put. Are you just gonna be carless then?

Milky oil sounds like headgasket, or it could be an internal leak in the oil cooling system.
In any case, I bet whatever fluid comes out is sparkly

Yeah, for awhile. I'm waiting for a big job upgrade, and once I get that a lot of doors will open up to me financially. Until then I'll try the bike-only life I guess

Water pump impeller gaskets are a common failure mode on bikes, it can lead to coolant and oil mixing. That’s probably more likely than headgasket, but I don’t have any model specific knowledge.

I would recommend checking out Yamaha’s 700/900 lineup as well. The 900 triple is a gem of an engine and are quite affordable. They also have that sweet sweet Japanese reliability . Yamaha recently partnered with Eagle Rider rentals to provide their bikes at much lower rates than normal to promote the brand. The Seattle location is part of this promotion. You can get an unlimited mile rental for $49 or $79 per day depending on model. A rental is a great way to really get a feel for a bike.

I really wanted to try an XSR900, but last I checked Yamaha's finance department was advertising something like 17% apr compared to Ducati's 0%.

On e of my coworkers has an XSR900 in blue. Its a fantastic bike to ride. I rented a FJ-09(now Tracer 900) in Hawaii and absolutely fell in love with it. I will hopefully be buying a used one in the spring. I’ve never ridden a Monster so I’m not sure how the XSR900 compares.
That Ducati financing is really hard to beat, but Yamaha does currently have a 2.99% promotion if your credit is good.

I’m not really sure where to go. My credit union is notorious for turning down loans even t o very well-qualified candidates, so I don’t really want to risk a hard pull there for nothing. And aside from the CU, I deal with online-only banks at this point...

A a couple of applications for the same type of loan in a short period of time don’t really hurt your credit. You can always try other credit unions in the area. Or see if your online bank has any loan options
