Kinja'd!!!

Painting the exterior of a car vantablack is stupid; however, as I was driving home the other day, the sun was coming through my windshield at such an angle that it reflected off my dashboard, resulting in a glare on the windshield.

Would coating a dashboard in vantablack reduce glare, since it absorbs up to 99.96 % of light?

It should. Same principal as how they used to paint the area below the windshield on planes black:

Kinja'd!!!

Presumably vantablack would be more effective though.

Yup, pretty sure it would. Find a video of them shinning a light on the stuff. It just fucking disappears

The more invisible the X6 is the better.

Although that seems like it would be a bad thing at night.

I wonder if that color will bork the signal from radar guns in speed traps?

Apparently vantablack was a Thing before the BMW paint article? It’s starting to sound like it, but I had never heard of it until Jalop.

I never thought about night driving - it would be very dangerous from  a side angle.

Its eerie, and slightly disturbing. Highlights the idea of black not as a color, but as a lack of light reflected

The story about vanta black is nutty too. Some guy bought the patent to it, there was drama, someone else made an even blacker / more light absorbing vanta black and made it so only the vanta black patent owner wasn't allowed to buy it or something. It's just all obscene and petty - albeit comical.

Even if it’s just the dash? Black paint already absorbs 90% of light.

Definitely a thing. A cool thing. I think there’s someone making something that is even more black.

There’s been some interesting art installations done using it. There’s also been some controversy because artist Anish Kapoor (notable for Chicago’s Cloud Gate sculpture among others) acquired an exclusive license to use the color for artworks.

The problem with this idea is that Vantablack is very fragile and wouldn’t stand up to the abuse of being a dashboard coating.

I took color theory in college , and learned about additive and subtractive colors. In subtractive (think paint or CMYK printing ), black is the combination of all colors. In additive (think lights, RGB computer screens), black is the absence of all color.

That’s what’s being demonstrated with Vantablack - there’s just nothing for the light to reflect off of.

Sorry, was referring to the entire car painted black.

I’d think gloss black paint absorbs much less than 90% of light as a good portion of it is reflected and refracted off the surface. A super matte black like vantablack would absorb significantly more heat.

I think you could do a “cool” black and add some violet/blue to the mix that would result in ~90% of the same light absorption properties, but reduce heat emissions significantly. I used to work in automotive leather and that was the next big thing in the late 2000s - adding some slightly lighter pigment colors to deep blacks to give a black leather that didn’t completely roast the car. The newest luxury cars have these pigment combos and you’d never know otherwise.

Every time you try and operate these weird black controls that are labeled in black on a black background, a little black light lights up in black to let you know you’ve done it.

They aren’t actually going to coat real cars in  vantablack. It’s not a paint, it’s a 3D coating system of carbon nanotubes that’s hilariously fragile. It’d be destroyed about 30 seconds after leaving the factory.

There’s an alternative matte black out there that’s almost as good as vanta black. The seller/creator has good fun poking that fancy artist that licensed vanta black too.

Stuart Semple Black 2.0

There is a competitor to Vantablack because VB is restricted to only be used by the artist that made it(Kapoor licensed the exclusive rights) , very fragile, and EXTREMELY toxic.

So use Black 3.0! S emple decided to team up with paint makers and about 1,000 artists to develop and test a competitor to Vantablack. His first version, Black 2.0, wasn’t quite as black as Vantablack, since it only absorbed 95% of the visible light (Vantablack absorbs about 99%).

Now, Black 3.0 is out and available on Kickstarter for about $32 per 150ml tube. According to Semple, it is the blackest, mattest, flattest acrylic paint available on the planet, capturing up to 99% of all the visible spectrum radiation. The paint is based on a new pigment called Black Magick, whose exact composition they aren’t disclosing. Black 3.0 is made up of this pigment, combined with a custom acrylic polymer. Semple and his colleagues claim that the polymer “is special because it has more available bonds than any other acrylic polymer being used in paints,” allowing more pigment density. The paint is then finished with what they claim are new “nano-mattifiers,” which remove any shine from the paint. Unlike Vantablack , the resulting paint is soluble in water and nontoxic.
