Decently sized lad, it is. It was just crawling along the side of the fence and I noticed it out of the corner of my eye, and now it’s just making rounds along the perimeter of my backyard. It seems to have come in through the gate’s gap but d oesn’t see it as an exit, though. What do we do? This is weird.

Relocate trapped turtle to nearby woodlands. That is all.

Any bodies of water nearby? Gently place by the shoreline, so it can choose land or sea

That might be a Gopher Tortise... though the color seems too dark... they are pretty teritorial and usually don’t stray too far from their home burrow... I’d pick him/her up and put him/her outside the gate/fence and see if he/she heads home.

Seems like it’s protected, so I’d either place it outside the fence perimeter or just leave it be.

It is my understanding that you never really want to pick up a turtle and move it a long distance because it will become disoriented and not know where it is. Is it possible you can put him on the other side of the fence.since he’s insisting on going that way?

Cute tortoise!
Would your yard be a good home for it? In most states it’s illegal to relocate those without a permit but I think it would be alright if it decides to live on your yard. It’s a burrowing animal so a tunnel would appear too .

ID your turtle: https://www.discoverlife.org/mp/20q?guide=Turtles
What part of the US or other do you live?
If you have to move the turtle around, use a broom handle. You’ll find out quick if it’s a snapper if it bites and you say, “woah..”
Be careful if it’s a snapping turtle. They are very very fast, with snapping at you. It can also take a chunk out of your hand. If it’s a box turtle, they’re fun. But chance nothing here.
I’m thinking a Gopher Tortoise.
