What’s a good middle-of-the-road used MacBook Air? I’m not a Mac guy. There were comments in the news about the new MB Airs being solid, glued-together monoliths that are no longer serviceable nor able to be upgraded. And there were expensive Retina screens. My daughter wants one and I wanna shop used.

Her primary use will be web-based college courses and watching The Office on Netflix. For the fifth time...

Suggestions?

I have a 2015 MacBook Pro I bought new in 2016. It’s a great computer. I’ve had no problems in 3 years of ownership.

Mind you, I have upper level finance courses with excel running most of the time when I do schoolwork, so I can vouch that it’ll be more than plenty for her.

Refurbs from Apple
Refurbs from Macofalltrades

I like to stay within 3 years when I’m buying used. However I’ve got an MacMini that is going on 8 years old that would still do everything she’s needing. I have however upgraded the ram and hard drive.

The biggest thing with a used laptop, particularly a Mac is the battery. I’d be after one that I was comfortable replacing myself. (one where you don’t have to use a heat gun). If that exists.

Samesies with a MacBook 12 which is nowhere near as capable as yours . I’m in IT so all of my peers make fun of me while they lug in their ridiculous laptops. I don’t need power as I remote into everything.

I use my sister’s old 11in MBA.... it’s very solid, it can handle any sort of web usage, basic Office programs , and the battery is astounding. I’d be happier with a 13in version but beggars can be choosers.

However, anything heavier would probably be too much

Honestly, not a macbook air. Any computer will do these and the macbook is just a status symbol.

That’s where my daughter is. She doesn’t care about MacBook Air, just about light weight.

She just wants the light weight. And she’s Apple. That’s it.

Apple’s ecosystem has a lot of features beyond status.

The recently-discontinued 12” MacBook would be worth looking into. Lighter than the Air if I recall correctly.

Just be wary of the keyboard. There’ve been a lot of problems with dust, and maybe even just normal wear and tear , causing problems.

You’re not incorrect, but if you need a machine for running a web browser to participate in online classes, microsoft office or similar, and watching netflix, literally any machine in the past 5 years will do this very well.

MacOS is a simpler operating system that tends to be less resource intensive. So small computers running it can be very compelling; except for price I guess.

Sounds like a show stopper.
